Well, with Steve Sinofsky from the Office team in charge of Windows 7, they are following his footsteps of being very careful about what gets out about the product. More info here-interesting read. They, hopefully, are just showing small stuff and will follow the practice of "underpromising and overdelivering"

Did you see the video from the All Things D conference where Mossberg mentions the new taskbar? The person demoing multi-touch (Julie Larson-Green) wouldn't give as much as a hint about what it does.

Thanks for the link. I'm glad they put him in charge because I really like the product Office 2007 has become. It was different at first, but I really like the interface now.

we are not saying wondows 7 is crap all we are trying to do is not get ours hopes up and it ends up being crap

for all me know it can be the best os to come out
    or the worse

and the video that microsoft produce was not all that great you have to admit not everyone is going to get a touch computer espalliy if we spend 2-7 thousand dollars on our dream machine. they could of produced something better for the first video

Need it be said that first impressions count for a lot? MS wasn't debuting to Joe sixpack but to a more technically-minded forum, so why debut cheesecake if there's more substantive food on the menu? We all know that coders can do really gee-whiz things with the UI - many more compentently than MS - and, as you rightly point out, the final UI won't be properly coded out for a while yet, so what was the point of that little display, other than a thinly veiled attempt to distract everyone from the little man behind the curtain? This is a lesson the auto industry (should have) learned from the 70s - if your previous product is a lead balloon, don't lead at the next car-show with your new paint colours that sparkle, dazzle, and take on different shades depending on what angle you're looking at the car from.

It may be more difficult to come up with a visual depiction of the non-GUI internals, but it can be done and, more importantly in MS' case, must be done, at the risk of leaving everyone with the impression that, like Nero in the apocryphal story, MS is fiddling while Redmond burns.

Furthermore, even if one grants that multi-touch represents a distinct step forward in UI design, so what? For those of us who have no need to draw homey little pictures with two fingers instead of a mouse or trackball - or better yet, scan in one of the kids' drawings - all MS managed to demonstrate with that little antic was that they intend to further bloat up the OS with functions that I don't need and that have no value-added as far as I'm concerned.

Lastly, even if multitouch is the greatest thing since sliced bread, MS may live to sorely regret this little episode if, once the GUI is finally coded a year and a half from now - as you indicate - the multi-touch functionality cannot be sufficiently integrated into the final UI and ends up being left out. MS will then have simply raised unnecessary expectations that it cannot satisfy - just as it did with _Vista - and that may have a lasting negative impact on MS as many people, whether consciously or not, do operate by the motto "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" - I don't think most users are going to sit still for being played the fool twice in a row by MS, particularly with regard to something that is truly not crucial to the function of Win7 as an OS per se.

From what I understand Bill Gates saying, Windows 7 is supposed to change/ alter the interaction we have with computers and apparently 'touch' (including voice) is the way of the future. ( http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...s_end_of_PC_mouse_era/articleshow/3086470.cms)

So, how do we do text input? God help me if I have to use a pen to scrawl on a screen to write a thesis or a book or even a longish article! I mean even VRTs are not sophisticated enough to do complex textual entries (going by my experience of inputting references - footnotes/ end notes etc.)

And if I have to resort to the keyboard then why would someone embrace Win 7 and not stick with Vista which by then should be like what XP is today?

Edit: On the other hand...text inputting by typing with fingers on a screen would be cool but impractical - sometimes I type so hard (generally I bang in the 'Enter' key so hard) that I may end up making holes in the screen! What then?
