Ok, I know Vista was released relatively recently, but I forgot it was only released public January 2007. This means if Windows 7 is released in September or so, it has had less than a three year shelf life. Does this mean Microsoft is working on the next significant OS?

This, to me, proves Vista was a stop-gap OS (Windows ME anyone?) since XP was aging. To me it seems kind of odd that they went this route, considering Vista really didn't offer a whole bunch more over XP, yet they're stuck supporting it. Why not offer a Service Pack that made a graphical and navigation overhaul to XP? A little too late I know.

I'm not complaining or bashing Vista by any means. It just seems odd that Microsoft would "waste" resources on an OS that lasted only a couple of years.

That is troubling me too. Win 7 interface looks similar to me atleast besides its features. I would say XP+Vista=Win 7.

No. Not again. We just had the exact same thread yesterday.

Look, the 2.5 year "shelf life" of Vista is longer than Win 98, 98SE, or Me, and only slightly shorter than Win 95. In other words, it's about average, except for the unusually long "shelf life" of XP. And XP only had a long life because Vista was delayed so much... and because resources were diverted to fixing its security problems, which resulted in XP SP2. Otherwise it would've lasted much less long.

Why doesn't anyone bash Apple since the average "shelf life" of their OS releases is less than two years.

If MS wants to put their dry spell behind them and go back to releasing a new OS every 2-3 years, I'm all for it.

MacOS release an OS every 1-2 years.
Ubuntu/Kubuntu release an OS every 0.5 years
Windows release on average 2-3 years.

    So why are you complaining?

That is not only that is better you are get used to it because of big stop after XP
    Look in the past ..
    Win 95
    Win 98
    Win ME
    Win 2000
    XP (1Year)
As you can see there was 2 years diff.
The microsoft had time plan but once XP released it was quite Big Boom
    Graphic design changet,system in OS
People start like it but not from early begining
Later because microsoft stopped ''2-year'' time plan because XP slowly ,slowly become ''blue-eyed'' ( like it's all blue ) :D after service pack 1
This XP pack found love in users ..

In reality Windows 95 was the first big change. Then XP. Vista seemed like a beta version of Windows 7. I like Windows 7 and anxiously anticipate it's final release.

Yes, I realize that users never give apple flack for releasing a new OS that almost renders the old one obsolete less than 2 years apart.

My only conclusion is that people who makes these complaints do not know about the fallacies of other OS's and thus judge Vista only on its own creator's merit.

Why is it any time someone has a question about an OS, it always turns into a a war? I wasn't complaining as jackluo923 suggested. Merely asking a question. Secondly, if I wanted to know about Mac OS, I would have. They are their own beast.

But I see this was already asked in the link provided by swarmer, so you can kindly close this thread.
