I'm confused. Will the original release of windows 7 cost me $199? I was gonna build a computer and install windows 7 on it but I think $200 is kind of a killer because I could buy another 4870 with that $100(not that I plan on doing it.) I read that you can upgrade for $99... but I don't know. Someone help plez!

    Thanks

if you're building a new computer, you can buy the OEM version of windows 7 for much cheaper than what you're going to get when you buy the retail version of windows. its the retail version that's expensive. if you have an exisiting version of windows already, then you can also buy an upgrade version that again is cheaper than the retail version.

Sooooo Im still confused, is it gonna cost $100 for OEM or what? Plus should I get the starter or home premium, is there any difference. What about 64-bit?

I just feel like I should not pay $200 just for OS that doesn't even have virus protection...

Hint: I don't think anyone knows what the OEM package price will be.

Windows version differences have been documented extensively. Search here or look at microsoft.com. As to Starter or Home Premium, I doubt Starter will be available to the public even in OEM format.

As to the $200 figure, that's fine that you think that, but kind of irrelevant to what the pricing will be. You either find the best deal you can, you choose to use something else, or you sell out your integrity and pirate.

    As far as pricing:

Upgrade Versions (requires ownership of Vista or XP)

    Home Premium: $119
Home Premium Family Pack (3 licenses): $149
    Professional: $199
    Ultimate: $219

    Full Versions

    Home Premium: $199
    Professional: $299
    Ultimate: $319

OEM versions tend to cost $10-20 less, but are tied to the first computer it is installed on, and does not recieve support from Microsoft.

Sorry, but you are missing Windows 2000. Microsoft specifically mentions in bold that if a user has Windows 2000 they can use the Windows 7 Upgrade license.

My sincere apologies to anyone running Windows 2000. I tend to forget about operating systems built in the last millennium.

Well, if you own a Win2000 disk/license, collecting dust somewhere. And you have a system that is not Win7 Upgrade license illegible (like a system that has no OS, as it's new computer that you build yourself). You can use back your dusty Windows 2000 to make it illegible for a Win7 Upgrade license and save some money. :)

Also Windows 2000 was released about 1 year earlier than XP... You can imagine how Win2000 users where pissed off. Most Win2000 users stayed with their OS as XP was really the same OS with a new help documentation, new log-in screen for Home systems, Wireless connection manager, a little faster startup, and a fancy skin. I am sure I am missing a few other minor features, but my point is that it was not worth buying a full Windows when you just paid the same amount about a year ago.

me being a gamer/video editor I am ready for dx11. I think that if there was a difference for gamers when xp was released it would have been a bigger deal but hardware was pretty expensive for not much eye candy anyway... I see it as being pointless for me to build a computer right now and install vista when I see myself a year from now playing dx11 games... I have the money but I am just waiting now. No I don't have windows 2000 lol :p I'm 15 and I don't really remember using windows 2000 at all...
