"Microsoft's official position, expressed by top executives such as Jim Allchin, is that Windows XP SP2, which was built by diverging resources away from Longhorn, should have been considered a new Windows client and not just a service pack. But in this context SP2 for XP provides a precedent, which in its turn gives an indication to where Microsoft is actually heading with Windows 7. By offering an evolution from what Vista is today, the Redmond company is essentially looking to repeat Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but this time around marketing the new version as a fresh major release."

    Yeah, **** Microsoft.

Once you buy something, that manufacturer should stop doing anything else in the future so your product doesn't become obsolete. I mean, after all, you are the king of the universe.

Whoa, that makes no sense. Windows 7 is a new product that you have to pay for. You do not pay for service packs. It's that simple.
Yes, SP2 was an anomaly because it offered a lot of new functionality, but claiming that because of this "precedent", anything that isn't a complete OS rewrite should be considered a "SP2" is just silly.

There's rumors abound that say Windows 7 might be a "package" type distribution. Sorta like how some games do that now, you get a core package for a certain price, then you add on to it.

The rumors started because Server 2008 is similiarly "modular." Since Windows 7 will look very similar "under the hood" as Server 2008, they draw this distinction from this similarity. Windows is already modular though. You don't want something, you can just uninstall it.

It is not going to be a Lego set though, like Linux. I can see consumers just unchecking packages they "think" they don't need and then having to reinstall these packages when they find out they are needed for often used features that their programs require. I think it is a bad idea and it is going to lead to more support calls. Anyone that has used Server 2008 core knows what I mean. While it is 25% the size of a full installation, the Core installation is about 500 times a pain in the rear to use and learn.

They can talk the hype for all I care but the bottom line is that if the developers don't get on the band wagon it'll be a lame OS. MS is already pleading with them to develop software/hardware for it. And like Vista, it'll be like molasses.

It's rumoured that "Windows 7" will actually be based on the Linux Kernel and a compatibility layer for legacy programs will be made. No programs will work in this compatibility layer except a Linux emulator. All of your software will have to be "Windows Voyager Certified." It will have system requirements like Windows 95 except with 4GB of memory as the minimum (up to 2048TB is supported, thanks to the upgrade to 256-bit computing). Oh yeah, the major upgrade in "Windows 7" will be a version of Solitaire called Chaos, which is played with road signs.

No one is forcing you to upgrade. Your OS will not magically stop working when Windows 7 is released.

I don't mind Windows 7 having no huge updates. I just hope they implement WinFS. Vista works fine for me and I'll be looking forward to Windows 7.

Overall, this is my feeling. Vista works fine for now. If they make 7 a new, state-of-the-art OS, then fine. If not, then fine. At the very least, I'm sure they'll add some interesting new features and, if the guy who developed MS Office 2007 is really on board as rumored, it should be really intuitive and attractive. I'd be happy with that.

Do any of you believe that they will start releasing new laptops and desktops that will be 'Windows 7 compatible' before the new OS is released, like they did before Vista's release? If yes, how soon do you think it'll be?

I think MS learned its lesson not to label stuff compatible in the future. Both have the same hardware requirements, but until a release date is set I doubt you will see any sort of compatibility advertisements.

They did this with vista too and screwing up after the initial release will be unavoidable for any OS which is completely re-written.
