"Microsoft's official position, expressed by top executives such as Jim Allchin, is that Windows XP SP2, which was built by diverging resources away from Longhorn, should have been considered a new Windows client and not just a service pack. But in this context SP2 for XP provides a precedent, which in its turn gives an indication to where Microsoft is actually heading with Windows 7. By offering an evolution from what Vista is today, the Redmond company is essentially looking to repeat Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but this time around marketing the new version as a fresh major release."

This thread should be extremely entertaining. Like T.O. said, "Getcha popcorn ready."

Meh. Linux will destroy the world.
-
So I assume Vista>7 upgrades will cost a fair price, say 50 bucks? /sarcasm
-
Windows 7 > Vista > windows XP SP 3.
This not an unknown news. Windows 7 will be built on the vista kernel. -
yes,, they are actually gonna fix VISTA????
that should be as easy as lowering gas prices -
-
so will it have a new interface
-
You will have a new face.
-
So will Windows 8 be between Windows 7 SP2 and Windows 9, close to what SP1 was to Vista?
-
Windows 8 will be like Iron man. Personal rocket jets.
-
-
Nice. Vista is such a great OS
-
vista is not bad you just need a good pc for it to work well
-
Will windows 7/8 have Compiz type of desktop?
-
I've only just got Vista working ok on my notebook and now they're announcing a new OS, way to go M$ - make my OS pratically obsolete why don't ya.
-
Once you buy something, that manufacturer should stop doing anything else in the future so your product doesn't become obsolete. I mean, after all, you are the king of the universe. -
DAMNIT!!!! I just "upgraded" to Vista 64, now I guess MS needs more money to take over more countries.
-
(10 chars) -
Yes, SP2 was an anomaly because it offered a lot of new functionality, but claiming that because of this "precedent", anything that isn't a complete OS rewrite should be considered a "SP2" is just silly. -
Btw, its rumored that Windows 7 will be subscription-based.
-
I'd take a lot of these rumors with a LOT of salt. -
-
-
-
What is the difference with today's selling strategy?
-
wow thats dumb as sh&t
-
It is not going to be a Lego set though, like Linux. I can see consumers just unchecking packages they "think" they don't need and then having to reinstall these packages when they find out they are needed for often used features that their programs require. I think it is a bad idea and it is going to lead to more support calls. Anyone that has used Server 2008 core knows what I mean. While it is 25% the size of a full installation, the Core installation is about 500 times a pain in the rear to use and learn. -
They can talk the hype for all I care but the bottom line is that if the developers don't get on the band wagon it'll be a lame OS. MS is already pleading with them to develop software/hardware for it. And like Vista, it'll be like molasses.
-
That's right, and believe me the developers will get aboard the band wagon, if there is money to make they will be at the meet, trust me. This is called products cycle and symbiosis.
-
It's rumoured that "Windows 7" will actually be based on the Linux Kernel and a compatibility layer for legacy programs will be made. No programs will work in this compatibility layer except a Linux emulator. All of your software will have to be "Windows Voyager Certified." It will have system requirements like Windows 95 except with 4GB of memory as the minimum (up to 2048TB is supported, thanks to the upgrade to 256-bit computing). Oh yeah, the major upgrade in "Windows 7" will be a version of Solitaire called Chaos, which is played with road signs.
-
I don't mind Windows 7 having no huge updates. I just hope they implement WinFS. Vista works fine for me and I'll be looking forward to Windows 7. -

I have XP, Vista and Ubuntu, if W7 comes out it will be an excuse for me to buy another powerful laptop
-
-
Believe it or not, I'm very seriously thinking about buying a MAC, but then it won't be W7
-
Windows 7 will be an odd ball when it comes out. What exactly will it do? Vista works fine for me. I'll wait if Win7 is worth it.
-
That is what people said with XP. It will be an odd ball when it comes out. What exactly will it do compared to Windows 2000? -
Do any of you believe that they will start releasing new laptops and desktops that will be 'Windows 7 compatible' before the new OS is released, like they did before Vista's release? If yes, how soon do you think it'll be?
-
I think MS learned its lesson not to label stuff compatible in the future. Both have the same hardware requirements, but until a release date is set I doubt you will see any sort of compatibility advertisements.
-
I would be happy if Windows 7 was Vista + all the features that MS promised for Vista but then dropped.
like a new file system.... -
