    Hey all...

I've read somewhere a few months ago that Microsoft would release some kind of a transformation pack so users could get the Windows 7 interface ? Does anyone have any information when the update will be available ? According to various sites it should be available this October via WU but nothing yet AFAIK.

    Regards,
    Jakob

You might want to stop and think about this "information" for a minute, and ask yourself questions like these: Why in the world would Microsoft want to do this? When has Microsoft ever done anything like that? Remember the "Vista Transformation Pack" for XP?

In short, the "Windows 7 Transformation Pack" for Vista has been out for a couple of days now. It's called an OS upgrade...

why would MS let people have a free UI update for their old OS when they want people to run out and buy their shinny new OS ????

TBO your question is really stupid... maybe from a 3rd party this might come out but no way will MS ever release anything like this ever(FULLSTOP)

i also agree with everything pirx said

What you're describing is the Platform Update for Vista and has been available for download from Windows Update since yesterday. Proof:

EDIT: Just a note that the article is misleading. This update will NOT update any component of Vista to look like 7. Paint, WordPad, Taskbar, Control Panel, etc. all still look the same. This update only gives developers the chances to target Vista and 7 users at the same time with a common interface.

Correct. This has nothing whatsoever to do with any real or imagined "transformation pack", and it doesn't "ribbonize" anything. All it does is provide certain UI elements for developers who wish to take advantage of them. So, sorry, but the OP's question remains naive... :D

Hey come on guys, this forum isn't here for insulting people. The OP's question is legit, cut him some slack. Go make fun of the people who ask about upgrading video cards.

OMG! Talking about jumping on his balls why won't ya. The OP has a legitament question and whether it is stupid or not a nicer input is more welcome.

You only need to know two things:
    - to upgrade Vista, you can purchase a Windows 7 upgrade

    - transformation packs are risky, half-baked copies of the real thing

Win7 is essentially Vista SP3 on steroids, so also consider it a transformation pack on steroids!

...but MS is making you pay for this "SP3 on steroids."

Getting a third party transformation pack for Vista will probably slow down that OS more. I wouldn't try that seeing how slow Vista already is.

My main language isn't english, and when things get a bit technincal my understanding isn't always the best. They way I've understood the different articles was MS would release a pack to make Vista look like 7. Of course it doesn't make any sense that they would but that was my understanding of it.

mtarm1, no harm done. I will upgrade to 7 eventually, I was just oping for a pack. I wont install unofficial tranformation packs as I know its a half done job...

Yes, I was about to mention that Windows Update was somewhat updated for Vista and looks exactly like the version in 7 now but that's only because it's the primary way Microsoft sends out updates to users so having the same Update client is usually less complicated.
