hi guys, i seem to have some confusion...which one takes less resources and is quicker?? basically i want to be able to run it both natively and through a virtual machine. also, i would prefer the lighter one...

In terms of resource allocation, Home Premium and Professional will be roughly about the same. However, Home Premium has a lighter (but still good) feature set, so I imagine resources could also be slightly less. Professional includes everything that Home Premium has, along with features that are designed for the business/workplace. Professional does contain more official Virtual Machine support from Microsoft though (example: Windows XP mode).
Here's a good comparison chart at Wikipedia -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions#Comparison_chart -
i would go for the Porfessional edition just because it sounds more "geek" -er than just home edition.
The XP Mode looks pretty slick however it doesnt work on every CPU. -
Quite honestly, all three major retail editions of Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) should perform about the same.

so this means that home premium is no lighter than professional?? i wanted to go with home premium. but would professional help me in my computer science degree?? will i be able to share folder between my notebook and my windows xp pc using the w7 home premium? my laptop gets quite hot under load...so i need the one which consumes less power and is lighter..

no difference in resources or power consumption unless you are actually using a feature in Professional.
For example, if you are using encryption, there will be a slight overhead while decrypting a file in professional (during access), but not so that you would notice.
That said, professional may be more suitable for your degree as you will likely be connecting to network domains at school -
so if my laptop is consuming 15W on windows 7 home premium, it will consume the same on professional?

yes................

but a will a professional edition have more services running at the same time as compared to the home premium??this may affect battery life...

You are (over thinking). Service don't use resources unless they are being utilized (other than a miniscule amount of memory).
The question you should be asking is "do I need the few additional features of Professional" not, "Is one using more (fill in the blank) than another" -
i guess you people are right then...i was asking this question because my mac tends to run hotter with load...i want to keep the load to the minimum...if home premium would have reduced the load, i would have gone for home premium...

yeah all three run the same i have all three and they all are within a mere couple % of usage
