Hi all.
Ive had a problem for a few days now. Ive tried to install windows 7 onto my Asus N10J Notebook. It seemed to all be going well until i start the laptop and it comes up wih a big red ERROR message with the heading cannot open file c:\RECOVERY.DAT.
Ive looked on forums on google on youtube and although i find information none of it has helped me. Alot of the information i find requires a disc drive which i do not have on my asus.
Ive tried to log on in Safe Mode and ALL the other options that it gives "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" etc and have the same ERROR problem with all.
Im really at a lost of what i can do. I am a total Noob with all of this so ill appologise in advance if i have to keep questioning any answers.
If more info is needed from me just ask.
Thanks in advance!!

You didn't mention how you tried to install win7. I'm guessing you used USB?
From what briefly read online, it sounds like a corrupt or incorrect MBR, and someone posted the solution as this:
Code:Boot on DVD Choose your language and everything else Than choose the "repair" menu Choose "command prompt" Type bootsect.exe Type bootsect /nt60 ALL There you go! (there is no "bootsect /nt60 ALL/mbr ")

It seems this is something that happens mostly to Asus laptops, and seems there is a solution for it.
Windows 7 - Error Can't Open Recovery.dat
As you don't have a dvd drive you need a USB flash drive to install those files you need to perform those tasks mentioned in the above link.
Read this for the entire procedure to solve the error problem:
How To Repair Windows 7 From USB Flash Drive (Repair Without Installation DVD Disc)
You can get a copy of windows 7 (trial version and is legal) that comes from Digitalriver
Download Windows 7 Install Disks Legally & For Free
You need to change the BIOS boot order so it starts from the USB flash drive.
hope it helps -
Thank you both for the help.
S Prime i did what you mentioned and it now works!!
Had to make a bootable USB with win 7 on it. Reinstalled win 7 completely, still had the error but then went to the repair area and cmd, typed what you found and its all good!
Thankyou so much for the help. Very frusturating haha
