Hello, i did not get a windows dvd when i got my computer last year, w8 is running on 1tb 5400rpm and is very slow and i want to put it on to an mSATA ssd to make it faster.
If i use the windows recovery to make a usb key or dvd, and delete recovery hd on my computer and install windows new, with new windows on mSata, can i then make recovery again on new usb or dvd if i delete the other or loose it?

I have read that windows-key is inside bios in the pc, do i have to get recovery disk from HP or will it work if i download windows 8 from microsoft??
i only have windows logo sticker under pc, nothing under battery.

It is hard to find information on this and i hope to get answers here!

First you need to get the product key from your BIOS using the below guide!

Secondly, you need to visit this site and enter your key, it will decode the product key and tell you for which edition of Windows 8 it is (ie. Windows 8 Core, Windows 8 Single Language, or Windows 8 Pro)

Thirdly, you will need to download the correct Windows 8.1 ISO as per your product key

Next, you need to burn that ISO to a DVD

Boot from the DVD to start the setup, when you are asked to enter the product key, DO NOT enter your real product key which you got now, because if your laptop came with Windows 8, then that key can only used for activation and not installation. So what you need to do is, google "Windows 8.1 default installation keys" and look around, you will find some generic product keys which are just used for the sake of installation but cannot be activated

use the default installation key as per your license that you have to install the correct edition

when you are in Windows, right click on Computer, go to properties, then at the end there is a link to activate Windows, now use your REAL product key that you got from your BIOS to activate and it will activate just fine

How to view the Windows 8 Product Key embedded in BIOS.......

    1) Download RWEverything

    2) Extract the ZIP

    3) Right click on rw.exe then choose Run As Administrator

    4) From the top left of the menu, click on Access, then choose ACPI Tables

    5) From the top row, you will find a lot of tabs, scroll to the right, then click on MSDM

    6) Your product key will be displayed at the bottom near Data

Yes, if your laptop has a recovery partition, you can create the recovery media, then remove your HDD and put the mSATA SSD ONLY. Now, boot from the recovery media and start the recovery but obviously on your mSATA SSD

Once everything is installed, change the DVD drive letter from D: to E:

then shutdown your computer and install the old HDD you had then boot up again

once you are in Windows, format that HDD and give it the drive letter D: then you can use it to store stuff like your videos, pics, etc and keep Windows and programs installed on the mSATA only

If you need more space on the mSATA, you can disable the hibernation file by typing the following command in an elevated command prompt:

    powercfg -h off

this will give you space equal to your RAM size, let's say you had 16GB of space, then you will regain 16GB of space which was the hibernation file's space

Hibernation is used for Windows 8 Fast Startup to boot your Windows faster but if you ask me personally, I hate that feature because when you shutdown it's not really a full shut down, it's like a standby but with no power consumption, so let's say you shut down and add your HDD then boot up again, you will notice that Windows will not detect the HDD at first as a new hardware detected until you restart another time.... why? because it never really shutdown, it hibernated (hybrid shutdown) so me personally I hate that feature and I couldn't care less if it will add 3 more seconds to my boot up, when I tell my PC to shutdown, I want a full shutdown so when I startup again everything is fresh

Well in that case usually the recovery media on the laptop can create a USB Flash Disk recovery media so apply the same strategy I mentiond above but replace the DVD step with Boot from your USB Recovery Flash Disk ;)

another alternative is, you can restore your laptop to its factory state, then use Macrium Reflect to clone your HDD to your mSATA SSD

Then change the boot order from your BIOS to have it boot off the mSATA SSD first

then once you're in Windows you can format your HDD and give it a drive letter D:
