Well, this is pretty annoying. Since last night, I've had this Automatic Maintenance notification randomly pop up in Action Center which simply refuses to go away:

I've already run the maintenance multiple times, and it seems to complete just fine, but the notification never goes away and it always tells me the maintenance was delayed after it supposedly finished:

I've also gone into Task Scheduler and manually run the Regular Maintenance task per the solution here, but no dice. Also rebooted the system many times.

    Any ideas?

Similar thing happened to me and I just turned off the notification. That's one of the many quirky things about W8, which includes the automatic AV scan but you get warned anyway that you haven't run it. :p

So there is no fix, just hide it?

Windows 8 deserves the h8.

I do not know if it can be done with W8 but go to CP & Task Scheduler and disable all Microsoft automated tasks, they're useless especially the CEIP program related tasks, and there are many, and the idle Windows Assesment Tool.
It works perfectly with W7 x64 and I manually perform whatever task when I thing it's needed.
System runs very smoothly, zero errors and warnings in Event Viewer and when pc is idle you do not see the HDD(s) thrashing with all those Microsoft crappy tasks.
