I loathe windows 8 but liked the news app, how it assimilated different news sources into clean headlines and so on. Is there anything like that for 7?

The closet thing I can think of is this rainmeter skin that pulls RSS feeds from various sites. Requires manual input (you need to manually find the RSS feed URL to your favorite sites such as reddit, engadget, gizmodo, lifehacker, etc.

    Browsing System Monitoring on deviantART

Each dot at the bottom corresponds to a particular feed. Dot 1 could be Reddit. Dot 2 could be lifehacker, and so forth. All the headlines are condensed into an visually appealing form.

You will obviously need rainmeter installed + download this skin. Then you will need to manually locate the RSS feed URL of your favorite news feeds.
