Not sure if I'm mistaken, but after the updates I installed last nite windows opens on the start screen as usual - then after a couple seconds opens the desktop... If I'm not crazy this is a nice surprise.

Mine doesn't. Do you have any third-party modifications to the OS installed?

Nothing other than the Updates I installed from Microsoft. I check for updates each day out of habit (& boredom). I have repeated the results several times... I'm on my VIZIO CT14AO pretty much stock.

I'm running Win 8 on two machines and neither do that. You've either got a bug or it's something Vizio added on.

That's the thing. I type a fourteen-character password to log on, and people are fussing over a single click to go to the desktop...where the first thing you're going to have to do is click something else to launch a program? Even if people refuse to pin that first program to the start screen and insist on going into the desktop before launching it, we're talking one extra mouse click per day. OH THE HUMANITY

I get to desktop if my phone is connected with USB. Have you added any hardware?

@ Mitlov Agreed Sir @ Mats Nothing Sir, I'm a Minimalist.. If I can help by a screen shot or something along those lines I'd be happy to help figure it out.. I boot up, enter my password, start menu comes up, about 6 seconds later it goes straight to the desktop if I don't click a tile....

since you brought it up, this one's worth sharing... so i use windows phone, xbox, skydrive, etc.--needless to say i use my microsoft account (formerly windows live id) quite a bit to sync across various platforms. a few months back i changed my password to a seventeen character string. my phone immediately stopped syncing and would give me a credentials error when i tried re-signing in. same for all the other services i use with that account. incredibly frustrating. this went on a for a good couple of weeks before finally, while attempting to access my account settings in a pc browser, i came upon an error which informed me that you can only use a sixteen character password, even if you set one that's longer. makes sense, right? anyway, i'm happy that W8 allows you to set a four-digit PIN.

if you have an usb device connected to your desktop, then it opens that usb device automatically. therefore it jumps to desktop and opens that folder

nothing plugged in any ports, it does this like clockwork. My desktop opens after 7 or so seconds ready for me to get to work ( kill time). I'm used to it now. If I boot up enter my password & click on a tile before 7 seconds (that's my verbal count not stopwatch timed) it will open the selected tile. If I do nothing or just move the cursor around aimlessly the desktop opens ready to go..

On that note, do you know if it's possible to associate Windows 8 with a Live account but forego the password upon startup? Nobody using my desktop is going to do anything malicious with my Live ID (if anything malicious even could be done), so I'd rather simply save the trouble of the password thing, particularly so my girlfriend can use the computer from startup if I'm not around.

I haven't looked into it because I bring mine to work. Good question though.

no, the only way to forego a password is by using a local account. if you use a microsoft account (formely known as a live id), you have to enter your password. i'm sure there's probably a registry tweak or something like that to circumvent it, but you'll see the following "security policies" message in the modern control panel/settings when logging in with a microsoft account:

Thanks. That's what I expected. Kind've like not being able to set exceptions to UAC. They want to protect us from ourselves by limiting options like that. Considering Windows' historical reputation as the ebola-carrying monkey of OS's re: virus susceptibility, I guess this kind of draconian security makes sense for them to clean up their image, but I could live with a bit more freedom.
