    Hi,
I'm in the Windows 8 upgrade offer and I would like to get it for such a cheap price, but I don't want to use it immediately on my laptop. So my question is: if I go through that upgrade helper application, will I be forced to install Windows 8 and lose my Windows 7 installation?

once you install an upgrade to windows 8 you loose the original windows 7 license, but not until you do that. You can purchase it and wait but if memory serves you can't legally purchase it and do a dual boot of windows 7 and windows 8.

Edit; While I did not install or order it, The upgrade assistant does want you to order and after download create installation media as in a standard installation.........

Whenever you purchase an Upgrade license from the EULA you incorperate the old into the new license. You do not however loose downgrade rights. As it states to downgrade you will need the original installation media................

    Edit from the EULA PDF;
What about upgrading the software? The software covered by this agreement is an upgrade to your existing operating system software, so the upgrade replaces the original software that you are upgrading. You do not retain any rights to the original software after you have upgraded and you may not continue to use it or transfer it in any way. This agreement governs your rights to use the upgrade software and replaces the agreement for the software from which you upgraded. After you complete your upgrade, additional software will be required to playback or record certain types of media, including DVDs.

Thanks for the replies. So basically I can buy it and download it through the assistant, but I can stop there and install whenever I want?

Edit: This video goes through the whole process and you can download it later indeed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdhWHZvM7hw

Right purchasing the upgrade doesn't looose Windows 7 rights, it is once you have done the upgrade or in other words you actually have upgraded the hardware. This could very well be the reason for alot of sales of Windows 8. People taking advantage of the cheap price but holding off on actually upgrading. We'll see what happens to sales once them promo's are off and Windows 8 returns to normal pricing..............

I upgraded my fathers Notebook for a while, but he don´t liked Windows 8. So I reinstalled Win7 even with old license. So I can definitly say that you not lose your Win7 license by Upgrade to Win8.

Yep, the price is the only reason why I wanted to get it now. Also I think MS is going to be very persistent with pushing Windows 8 (not like with Vista), because they want people to adapt to the new interface, so it's going to stay for a few years. And maybe in a year or so Win 8 will actually be the better choice overall.

Yes, they are being persistent as they aer trying to attract developers for the Modern UI and the windows store. Doing this by artificially creating a user base for the store itself. Most of those consumers are PC users rather than the typical ultra mobile devices such as phones and tabs. To that end I'm not sure with Windows 8 RT how many games will be available. Essentially they are making all windows devices as comunications and consumption rather than focusing on production.

to be honest I would spend the normal upgrade price over the $15 if Aero Glass and Gadgets were still there. Others would argue too for the normal start button and an opt out for modern ui. Giving an opt out for modern ui though would not be good for M$ and their user numbers they could quote to developers for Modern UI. Maybe once Windows 8 RT takes hold, and the Winhdows Store takes off, M$ will releaqse its hold on PC users. My problem there is M$ just uses its consumer base for its own agenda. So what is to prevent them from doing this all over again at any time it wants too?

In spite of Microsoft's fervent zeal to migrate users to Windows 8, you can always downgrade as others have alluded to. If you have a Windows 7 license, upgrading to Windows 8 does not immediately void that key. As long as it is valid, you have the option to roll back.

My recommendation is to take advantage of the price offer before it expires on February 1st, and hold onto the upgrade until you feel confident and comfortable with upgrading.

I suppose with an app like ABR you can backup and restore your manufactures pre-activted windows key, and this is completely different to the one on the bottom of your notebook.

You don't loose the Windows 7 license and I can also tell you, that you don't even need it. :)

I for myself have a license of each, but didn't want to install it as an upgrade as these are the worst. I've just formated the hdd and installed it cleanly. Was I asked for my Windows 7 key? Nope...
Don't wanna give bad ideas to people, but was just stating the facts. I don't use my Windows 7 license now, but I could install it just on another computer.

It is a personal choice on this end not to do the $15, but I can understand others doing so. This is the marketing M$ is relying on. I just personally chose to be one less user M$ can claim is a potential customer of their Windows Store. M$ already told me as a consumer what I can do with my wants and needs now I am telling them what they can do with theirs.

2x W8 upgrades bought here at the attractive price (otherwise would probably have not bought anything at all, basically just needed to stay in touch with 'advancement', no need for W8 in practice).

One was a download done from a W8 release preview , the 2nd download from an active W7 OS.

Both were downloaded and saved for later use > made bootable usbsticks.

They were later installed as 'fresh' installs, each on it's own dedicated HD, not touching any of the original W7's I have running. No sign of revocation of any previous OS license, after several months of use.

Regarding the upgrade downloaded with the active W7 OS as basis, only thing I can think of is it may not be allowed to use the W8 installation and the W7 (which was the base for the upgrade) at the same time on different pc's. Not an option here, so have not tried.

Basically, no licensing problems so far, can choose to run original W7 or new W8 at will, choosing which HD to boot from.

Thanks for all the replies guys. After I found out from that video that I wouldn't have to install Win8 right away, I bought the upgrade immediately, but I'm just keeping it for later. Win7 is perfectly fine for now :p.
