This was NOT a problem with W8. If I go to the top left of the screen and right click to close the app it would end the task. With Windows 8.1 you have to end the task in task mgr. This was a clean install of 8.1

Is this happening to anyone else? :hi2:

This is as far as I know, normal behavior for 8.1. It used to drive me nuts, however, given that it hasn't impacted the performance of my atom Thinkpad Tablet 2, I stopped worrying about it.

The music app which was running on my tablet not too long ago is no longer in task manager., I don't know what the time to fully close is though or if it got pushed because of the small 2 GB on the tablet. For me, all the apps use less than 1 MB even though the task is still running too, so it's not like they're memory hogs. That said, I can definitely see why it would annoy some.

Yeah I tried the drag to the bottom left corner and it does the same thing if I right click to close. I guess i'll have to get used to it.

this isn't happening for me in a fresh W8.1 install nor a W8.1 RT update. you also need only drag apps to the bottom of the screen to close them, not a particular corner.

Yeah I tried that and the App closes but when I check taskmgr they show up as running so I have to end the task.

hmm, i sort of misread the OP and you're absolutely right. how annoying. and stranger still is the fact that you can then "launch" the app by right clicking on it in the task manager--but it doesn't appear in the open apps bar...

i'm sure the official rationale is that "closed" apps apparently aren't consuming any resources but we all know that's bogus.

EDIT: yup, bogus indeed. "closed" apps are still taking up memory.

I found the answer, drag your apps to the bottom and hold them there till they flip over. This will END the app. If you look in task manager a few seconds after they will stop. An alternative to this is to use ALT F4 which also ends the app totally.

That does work but a needless step, right clicking on the app was much better but thanks for figuring it out.

Interesting, I hadn't noticed this behavior before, but it's absolutely true. For example, with Music, swiping down will pause the music, but unless you hold it at the bottom for a second to fully close the app, the next time you tap the Music tile, it'll take you back to the screen you left at and your music will recommence where it left off. If you hold the music app underwater until it quits kicking (I guess that's what the gesture is supposed to simulate), the next time you tap the Music tile, you'll have to wait for the app to load, wait for you to log into your online account (if you use online music pass), and you'll find yourself on the opening screen instead of where you left off.

I can see how some would like the new system and how others would not, but at least there's some logic to it. As with most things, it'd be nice if they gave you a choice between the the two options somewhere in settings.

Yeah, it would be nice to ave a choice of how closing apps behave, having your music start again with the volume at 100% instead of 20% is hard on the ears. :p
