My laptop was having a prolonged black screen after login,, The Problem was oem win 8,1 and the software installed by whom ever was done incorrectly,,I looked at msconfig and I was on selective startup , further I could not get to pc refresh and recovery options,,what I did was to buy win 8.1 full version , retail version and do a clean install and then install the manufacturers software, now everything works and boot up is super fast, now msconfig shows normal startup,,further M$ no longer supports java(not new) and microsoft secuirty essentials virus scanner is not downloadable to win 8.1.. I reviewed many fixes for the problems no one got it right,,I had the same problem with older oem vista notebook, problems could not be solved, I got retail vista inexpensive and then upgraded to retail Win 7,,problems all gone.
Cheers

Windows 8 defender,,huh,,,Like wearing tee shirt out into the snow and telling yourself you have enough clothes on.
As too Java went there for Java update and JAVA said not supported and no download button was available,
The windows update module was buggy as well, went thru every fix in the book,,nothing worked.
I went thru this several years ago when I got a lenovo laptop with vista preinstalled ect,, SFC/SCANNOW came up with tons of errors , contacted M$ technical support by email, sent the scannow log in ,, and then he told me , best solution was to buy a retail edition and do a clean install,,found one cheap, upgraded to win 7 retail disk,,all problems gone....
