My Clevo P150EM that I have been running Windows 8.1 since it's release decided about a week and half ago to hibernate whenever I select shutdown whether it is from the charms bar, right clicking the start button, or Alt + F4. I only realized this because the BIOS splash screen says resuming from hibernation.

My other Clevo P150EM that I just got didn't have this problem initially when I installed Windows 8.1 on it yesterday, however now, and even after a clean reinstall, whenever I shut it down it decides to hibernate.

It seems the only way I can get either computer to shutdown completely is from the command prompt typing "shutdown /p".

Does anyone know what the issue is? Also the older computer runs an old version of the Sager BIOS and the new one runs the Prema Mod so I don't think the problem is there.

Edit: I'm an idiot. So, somehow the setting got switched for my old laptop and apparently it is a default for my new one. I think it was because fast start up was on. I remember unchecking it when installing 8 and when updating to 8.1. I tried the cmd prompt "powercfg/H off" which removes it from the menu but I like Hibernate for on battery power when I leave my computer in sleep for 10 min to help conserve battery essentially. I don't know if fast start up is any different from shutdown. It was nice that it was fast but I worry I could damage something if I opened up the machine and did some tweaking.

If I remember my stuff correctly, fast startup hibernates the kernel, but that's the only thing it hibernates. There is no danger to it, you are offloading anything that gets hibernated to disk and you can power it off completely, remove the battery, etc, it won't damage anything.

I always disable Fast Boot and disable the hibernation file via powercfg -h off

Windows 8 doesn't do a full shut down unless you type a specific command prompt:

    shutdown /s /t 0

When I want to shutdown, I want a FULL shutdown not a hybrid shutdown so disabling it works best for me
