I have been experiencing this problem for a long time now and have not bother to look for a resolution, until today. Today I needed to view some pictures and these two stock Windows apps aren't working as they should. Sometimes the picture you want to view shows up, and as soon as you begin scrolling to the next, the pictures turn black. Sometimes when you select to preview a picture, they turn black immediately.

The following video shows exactly the problem using the Windows Photo Viewer. This issue never occurred when I use to use Windows 7. I have only experienced it in Windows 8.1. I cannot be the only one experiencing this, it is highly annoying and frustrating ( and this video proves I'm not the only one). Has anyone else ran into this problem and or found a fix?

When I was using Win8, a lot of pictures I had didn't open at all due to nonstandard format etc., so I downloaded few shareware picture viewers from web and never looked back. Those programs are smaller, faster, better.
I can't tell if it's the same pictures that show blank or not: if they are I would hazard a guess they might be corrupted, if random, I would look into error logs for clues, as bad as MS picture viewer was (IMO), I don't recall giving me that kind of problem.

It does sound like some incompatibility regarding the picture format. It's probably the programs expecting the picture to be saved a certain way and they aren't liking it. Kinda like how you can have a .mkv container with different types of encoding for the video and audio and not every player will take those well.

It's either that or your files got corrupted, do you still have access to a Window s7 rig tot est them?

    I do have a windows 7 machine, I'll give that a try.

I don't get why this issue is happening as I use to view pictures I would take with my Android phones on Windows 7 without a problem using the default photo viewers. I just like the stock viewers because you simply double click to open a picture then press left or right on the keyboard and you can view them one after the other. The aftermarket viewer I downloaded is slow as you have to navigate directories, and click the mouse cursor on a right or left button within the program to go to the next or previous pictures. That's slow and inexcusable in my opinion. Windows had it right for quick viewing. Never had any reason to look for alternatives until now.

These pictures are being taken with my 2013 Moto X from Republic Wireless using Kit Kat 4.4.4 if it makes a difference. Some if the pictures say "HDR" but even the ones that don't or do turn black. I was surprised to find only one video on YouTube on this issue.

What is the extension of those photos that show up black? Maybe you can post one of them on a file sharing site for us to look at.

I'm sure you know you can change default program to open any type of file, so all you do is click on picture.
For example FSviewer seems fast enough for me and you don't have to install it, since it's portable, so it will work even from USB drive to test, it's 100% full screen, arrow keys go forward/back, esc takes you out and you can do some basic resize, adjustments etc., but I'm not sure if it works under Win 8
