I recently purchased a Western Digital 320 GB external hard drive and I am trying to set up the automatic windows backup. I have it set to backup every night at 11:00 PM. However, I cannot get it to backup even once. Here is a screen grab of the error message:

I don't think this is relevant but the hard drive is connected via a 1394b firewire port. It has just been formatted to NTFS so there are no files on it.

Have you recently merged any partitions? Also, have you checked the application event logs?

Do a start-->Run and type services.msc and hit enter. Make sure the Volume Shadow Copy service and SPP services are started. The best thing and most of the time surest thing to do to solve the issue is to check the Event Logs and go from there.

To access Event Viewer go to Start, right click My Computer and select Manage. Event Viewer would be on the list to the left. You want to look for red errors pertaining to Backups/VSS/SPP.

The firewire thing could possibly be an issue, so you might want to try some workarounds if you can.
