I'm trying to help my sister with her laptop. It is the same as my old laptop (Dell Studio 1535) that I couldn't figure out how to fix. (I'm still working on it, though!) Her laptop overheats so hot that it crashes. We're going to try undervolting it to see if that helps. *crosses fingers*

Anyway...she wants to backup her files before we undervolt. She has Windows Vista. Has anyone used Windows Backup and Recovery before? Is it good? I read mixed reviews elsewhere, so I'm a little worried about my sister not being able to recover her files.

If it's crappy, can you recommend another FREE AND SAFE program? Thanks for the help! :)

OT means dirty or plugged vents. Did you consider that it needs a house cleaning if one wasn't done every year she owned it. Doing Window Recovery will not fix this problem. If you don't know how to dust out the bunnies then you need to take it to shop to verify if dirty vents or heat sink is going bad.

Yeah, it's been cleaned thoroughly. She wants to backup her files before we undervolt, but I've never used Windows' Backup program before. I read some reviews that it doesn't work well when you decide to restore your backed up files. o_O

I like Macrium Free Reflect. If you have separate OS and data/storage partitions you can back them up to separate images that you could restore later.

Other popular backup/restore programs include AOMEI Backupper and EaseUS Todo Backup.
