The Start Button is back on Windows 8.1(Blue) by intalling the updated Classic Shell version 3.6.6

    Welcome to Classic Shell

New setting to make the taskbar opaque, many bugfixes and improvements.

Pressing the Start/Windows key then typing my search word doesn't work with Classic Shell like it does with W7 or W8. Have you experienced the same?

Yeah there is no 'file search' functionality unfortunately, only searches the program names. Prefer the global search that the windows key used to give.

I believe StartIsBack and Start8 both allow you to search files/folders + programs. Just noticed that they [tout] booting into the desktop as well. :)

Yes me too, sure is a handy little feature.

Thanks, I'll have to give those two a shot.

When you click on the Classic Shell Start Button don't you get a right side column with Search>For Files and Folders or are you talking about something else?

Are you using Blue build 9364 with Classic Shell 3.6.6?

As an aside, I have no idea why so many people seem to recommend Classic Shell, when the above two, and StartIsBack in particular, are clearly far superior alternatives.

Probably because its a free alternative, Start Menu 8 was also ok as well. I just went back to the stock windows menu, I don't mind it after having used classicshell and start menu 8, the small annoyances just made me uninstall them. If i ever feel the urge to have a start menu I will try the paid alternatives.

Yes that search box is there but I simply meant when you press the Windows Key on your keyboard, then immediately begin typing whatever it is you want to find. Having to reposition the mouse and clicking inside the search box is simply adding steps that are not needed when Windows 7 and 8 make it so much easier by default (press the Windows Key, start typing, results appear). A minor nuisance is all.

I was using this on official Windows 8 Pro w/ Media Center.

Old stuff probably will never see the light of day again.

Still waiting for an Ace Combat 04/5/Zero high-def remake, petition signed and sent... :p

There is a certain tool that brings it back, but integrated would be nice, since it doesn't work well if you run it with OS startup. So I've read a while ago, dunno, maybe something has changed.

I think we're MUCH less likely to see aesthetic changes than functional changes...and I think that's okay.

While I agree with your first point, I naturally disagree, vehemently, that that's o.k. While functionally less critical, perhaps, Microsoft has ripped out the code required for Aero-type schemes out of pure spite. Once again, there was no rational reason, none at all, to do this. Definitely not o.k. in my book.

I guarantee you that "spite" was not the reason they changed the aesthetic. No company EVER changes their aesthetic design out of "spite." You're presenting this as a malicious act when it's really just a design language shift.

When Android adopted Holo design language, Google wasn't acting out of spite for people who hate Holo.
When Apple adopted skeuomorphic design language, Apple wasn't acting out of spite for people who hate skeuomorphic design.
When Apple adopts "flat design" in the next year as Jonathan Ive has been talking about doing, Apple isn't going to be acting out of spite for people who prefer chrome and skeuomorphism to flat design.
When BMW adopted Chris Bangle's "flame surfacing," it wasn't acting out of spite for people who hated "the Bangle butt."

    Etc.

You hate the Metro design language. Fine. But there's no reason to even suggest that there was some conference at Microsoft where a bunch of designers were like "hey, you know that Pirx guy and folks like him? We've always wanted to pee in their cereal, and now we know just how to do it..."

They deleted AERO rom Desktop mode to force people choose the Metro style.

I call it "spite". To a my side.

spite (noun): A desire to hurt, annoy, or offend someone.

Whether you like it or hate it, do you really think that Microsoft switched from Aero to Metro aesthetic out of "a desire to hurt, annoy, or offend" someone, instead of a desire to unite brand identity behind one particular aesthetic?

Once again, this poster completely misses the point. An alert reader may have noticed that I did not comment on Microsoft's design choice at all. Not a single word in my post referenced "design" in any way, directly or otherwise. What I did comment on was the fact that Microsoft wantonly eliminated OS functionality. There was no reason to do this, given the fact that this code was in fact still present in the final release preview. Microsoft was free to leave that code in place, while choosing any design of their liking.

They not only elected to change the desktop theme, which is perfectly fine, but then they decided to actively prevent people from selecting a theme that had been present before. As a side effect, they also prevented companies like Stardock from offering such themes to their customers, since OS support for the required functionality was removed.

These are all entirely irrelevant musings, see above...

    with some plain nonsense added.

Why do you always feel the need to attack a poster instead of just disagreeing with the substance of their post?

Not desire to hurt/annoy but it hurts/annoys. I could use faster and snappier OS but I will not. No AERO No WIn8.

But that's not what spite means. Your annoyance is an unintended consequence, not Microsoft's purpose. Microsoft's adoption of Metro design is not driven by spite. The same is true whenever any company changes its design language and the new design is not 100% popular. The same could be said of Sony abandoning the barrel hinge for Vaios and going with an angular design instead. Some Sony fans hated the new look, but Sony's redesign was NOT driven by spite; it was driven by a new artistic direction for the company.

Well good news for you. Now the latest public beta version of Classic Shell (3.9.0) has full Windows Search integration, including file search. Try it if you are interested.
