I had Windows XP and Windows Vista installed on the same machine. I formatted the partition with Vista from within Windows XP instead of properly uninstalling it. However, when I boot the computer up I get a menu asking me if I want to boot into Windows XP or Windows Vista when Windows Vista is no longer installed. How can I get rid of the prompt asking me which OS to choose and just have it boot by default in XP?

    Start > Run > msconfig
    Go to the BOOT.INI tab
Click Check All Boot Paths and if it asks to get rid of something, like extra, unused boot paths, click Yes
    Reboot

go to the control panel and click on system then on the advanced tab. Under start up and recovery click settings. You will then see a list of oses and can change the settings. Let me know if this helps because I am going on memory as I no longer use xp.

Nope, it didn't ask me that and at the top it says to modify Vista boot settings it says to do it from within Vista which I of course do not have.

    Thanks though

Try the recovery options from the XP install CD; either fixmbr or fixboot. On restart should be clean.
