So...I managed to uninstall Windows Defender from Vista...

Now my problems is...I can't get it back! I can't run the install file because it gives me a message saying "You don't need to install Defender, Vista comes with it already."

Anyone have a solution other than this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=935511

    Thanks.

Wow...Vista at its best. Personally, I'd get a third party security program...you actually trust MS to make a decent protection program when they are the ones who made the relatively unsecure OS???

How did you manage to uninstall Defender? Are you sure you didn't just disable it instead of uninstalling it?

im sure you can do a repair to fix that with your vista disk.

I see thats close to what that link says to do, but you should be able to install the files you want without the whole OS if you find the right instructioins.

I had Defender pre-Vista, did an upgrade since I was lazy and was going to wipe this computer in a month anyway, and then saw it on my program list in Vista. Security Center wasn't seeing it, so I figured I'd uninstall it to see if I could and...well...I could :p

I uninstalled Windows Defender a long time ago, but it won't let me uninstall the signature updates. Weird.

I'm curious. How do you uninstall Defender in Vista when it seems like it is stuck with Windows like Windows Media Player?

I had it XP before I upgraded to Vista and it was still there in my program list after the upgrade.

I only have XP, so I'm not sure about Vista. ;)

Defender does not show up in the list to be eligible for removal in Vista Home Premium; however, I did disable it. Windows/Microsoft Update still wants to download and install the signature updates, which always fail installation. I was able to manually install the most recent update, but it still keeps showing up in the available updates list, so I marked it hidden so it would cease to annoy me.

Is the Vista a typing error? Maybe you wanted to type in XP ;)

Anyway, the best i know is that it is possible to disable Defender from starting up. So how do manage to uninstall it?

No, I installed Defender on Windows XP. Then I upgraded to Vista. Defender still showed up in my "installed program list" so I could select it and uninstall it from there. And now my Vista doesn't have Defender anymore.

Well you said you were going to wipe the system.....now you have 1 more reason to do so.

Indeed...not that I particularly care of Defender's on the system, but it's actually so integrated into Vista that a few of the other Control Panel options won't open without it. Sorry, can't quite remember which ones - they weren't that important, but I found it annoying.
