I've usually been able to handle most computer problems that have come my way but this one has stumped me and I need some assistance.

My computer has been acting fine and I haven't had any troubles with it lately. But today when I downloaded a file (a word document that I had typed early on another computer and sent to myself via email), I got an error that Windows Explorer has stopped working. I clicked "Restart the Program" but it immediately crashed again.

    Here's the problem details:
    Event Name: BEX64
    Application Name: Explorer.exe
    Fault Module Name: MSVCR90.dll

There's a lot more details that I could write if needed, but I'm not sure if they're needed so I'll leave them out unless they could be of help.

Anyways, I restarted my computer and as soon as I login, the same error pops up again. And I can't even access my start menu because the Explorer has crashed.

So I booted into Safe Mode. It works for about 20 seconds and then crashes. After clicking "Restart the Program" I get about another 20 seconds before it crashes again. I quickly do a system restore to 3 hours earlier...it restores successfully but the error still persists.

I'm out of ideas... any help would be much appreciated.

    Thank You

I've read some reports that mention the problem being fixed after deleting the file that was downloaded at the time of the error.

I see the file on my desktop, but I can't click it and delete it because the explorer.exe constantly crashes.

Is there a way I can delete the file while in safe mode with command prompt only? The file is on my desktop.

    Thanks

There is always a way :D
This may sound stupid but you can always try to connect your HDD as a external device to another computer and see if it does the same.

Have you tried to restart Windows Explorer after crash? Press CTRL+Shift+ESC and run 'explorer.exe' this may work...

    Thank you for the response!

But luckily I have fixed the problem :)

I needed to delete the file that I downloaded at the time the error started. Since I couldn't delete it with a normal boot or in safe mode, I tried deleting it using Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

    DEL /F /Q /A "C:\Users\UserName\Desktop\File.txt"

    Fixed the Issue! :)

In case others have this issue, I've seen issues like this in both Vista and 7, both caused by viruses of sorts. I was able to stop it by doing both a full Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials scan, but probably more importantly is to either replace explorer.exe with a clean version from another install, or try running the system file checker (sfc /scannow) from the cmd prompt. I would recommend running the sfc anyways, as on both of the computers that were infected, there were more files than just explorer.exe that needed to be replaced.
