I have been having this problem lately for past few months now and its getting worse. My laptop's hard drive is divided into 2 partitions C is around 82GB and D is 150 GB, i have 2 GB free on C drive and 2.2 GB free on my D drive, but whenever i try accessing my D drive it freezes up on me and it says that Windows Explorer is not responding yada yada yada, so i just click restart and when I access it again its okay then. If i dont access my D drive in like 30 mins this will happen again and its getting really frustrating.

i read somewhere that it happens sometimes when a disk is not fragmented so i fragmented both C and D and im not really good with health checks and stuff nor do i regularly defragment my HDD, so when i defragmented both drives with the built in windows defragmenter it said 3% fragmented for C drive and 0% fragmented on D drive so im not sure if thats a sign that it went well or its not good at all either way i really need some advice

Download and burn Ultimate BootCD, it has multiple HDD test softwares so choose your hdd maker's tester and run the long test.

That way can hardware failure be ruled out.

CD has also Memtest86+ that runs continuous loops. Leave it running overnight. Just in case since bad memory can also cause corrupted files.

And the actual problem: get an external drive :)
