What are you trying to do? Share the entire drive? Not sure Vista will allow that.

Share a folder instead, not a drive.

If that doesn't make sense, perhaps a more detailed explanation of what you are doing....you should not need to "share" a drive if you are moving files form your computer to an external drive.

I may not be following you completely

As Gerryf19 says, we need more details about what you're trying to do, including what you've done so far. Also, check your event logs to see if anything got logged regarding these events; a log entry might identify the error more specifically and make it easier to track down the cause.

Well, I am still fuzzy--but this could be my fault as I only got 3 hours of sleep last night....

So, let's say you connect your external drive to you laptop. You get the little beep telling you the drive is connected and recognized.

Now, you open up COMPUTER, see the external drive (let's call it E: drive)

Now, open Documents and drag one file from Documents to E:.

    Nothing happens? It just beeps?

Well, that'd about do it; if you only have read and execute privileges, you are not going to be able to move a single file, because to do so requires that you be able to write to the file as well. No write privileges = no moving files.

What on earth possessed you to deprive yourself of write privileges?

How much monkeying around have you done with the interlocking systems of privileges and permissions (e.g., group policy)?

With all due respect, I think you've somehow managed to get privileges and permissions twisted up enough so that nothing is working correctly. The best thing you can do right now is to set all of your security policies back to their defaults, and then start all over again, only the next time, write down what you do before you do it.

    "i dont what to change"

What? You don't WANT to change from read only? Or you don't know WHAT to change to remove it from read only?

If you set your harddrive permission to READ ONLY then that is your issue right there.

Copying and Moving and Renaming all require WRITE privilidges

You go talk to the person who did make the changes and ask them to change it back.

I hate to say it, but this is sounding more and more like this computer isn't yours, and that the access privileges for your user account were intentionally restricted, in which case we cannot help you to circumvent those restrictions.

I'm completely befuddled by this thread....I cannot figure out what you did exactly.

Your terminology and your communication skills are making this difficult.

I don't think this is a case of someone elses computer---if he were a limited user he couldn't have gotten himself into this much trouble ;)

OK, don't do anything but the following. If you come back and say you did this and then did something else, I will not only stop helping but I will likely come to your home and drink all the beer in your fridge.

I want you to go to control panel and create a new user, as an administrator, and then log into that account.

No, right click the desktop, choose NEW > NEW FOLDER. Now do it again so that you have two folders, NEW FOLDER and NEW FOLDER(2).

Now, drag NEW FOLDER(2) into NEW FOLDER.

    Does that work?

Ok yes it is my laptop and when i said " i didnt do it" i meant that i assumed it was a virus. i have solved the problem trying to find where a 60GB temp rar went (i know lol) i discovered that all folders/files were set to Read Only for some strange reason(another reason to think its a virus). and also i coudnt make a new account for some reason the buttons didnt do anything that required admin in user account dont ask me why

    **EDIT**
Looking back through the thread that seems to be what you wanted me to do, but i wasn't thinking beyond security privileges and that didnt have a read only so if it is then its entirely my fault

Fair enough; one has to be a little careful around here, as there have been posts by people who were trying to break into someone else's computer.

It very well could be a virus, particularly if you change the files back to read/write/execute, and then they revert to read/execute only.

Thats exactly what they do as soon as i disable the Read only property and click apply and close and re open the properties tab it has Read only again but for some reason i can still move files(not folders only folders have read only) around via the folder stack view thing on the left side. i can also rename folders so to heck with it im just reinstalling vista seeing as this install is munted

That's probably the simplest and easiest way to fix the problem. Also, I apologize for being a little suspicious in my earlier post.
