Curious to those laptop users who use it. If so, why, and how do you see it beneficial. I've never used it, and know little about it, and if it's worth running.
-
Yes, i use it all the time. I have my power button set so that when it is pushed, my laptop goes into hibernation.
I really don't know why I use more than anything. I guess it is my only option really. I hate shutting down my laptop all the time and having to wait for it load back up again. Then you have to open all of your programs again, etc .. it is very repetitive.
Normally i don't have my laptop plugged in so i can't go into standby. Standby still uses power to store the data, but your fans,LCD, etc are turned off to save power. In hibernation, everything turns off and the data is stored in the memory, so when you turn your laptop back on, the programs that you were running before hibernation will still be there. With shutdown, everything is shut off, but nothing is stored in the memory. -
I don't really use it myself.. I use standby on my laptop at work as it's always plugged in, but I always shut off my personal machine as I really don't have much running at once anyways.
-
Yes, I use it everyday. I hate shutting my computer all the way down and then the next day having to wait for it to boot up. I only shut down and reboot about once a week. Ever since I found out hibernation uses no power I've been using that so I don't have to have it plugged in all the time if I want it to boot fast. I also have my power button set to put it in hibernation.
Hibernation is where everything is shut off and everything is stored on hard drive and uses no power, stand by stores any info you had open in memory and uses very little power, and shut down only stores you're saved information to the hard drive, anything open and unsaved will be discarded. -
I think hibernation is the best thing since bread. This is coming from the same person who rarely even shuts down his desktop computer. I have about 7-8 programs that I usually multitask at a time. not shutting down saves me about 15 minutes a day.

Twice a day.

i put the laptop in hibernate inbetween classes
-
I use it all the time, Hibernation is great. Fast loading inbetween classes or whenever
-
All the time...Of course , it makes life easier....for everyone and it saves our battery life

Can you use hibernate whenever you want? Like would it be bad to walk around campus with it in hibernate? Or is it exactly like shutting down, but it just boots up fast and saves all your open programs?
-
-
I use it....hate shutting down....and i hate stand by.....is uses power....hibernate doesnt....i have it set to power button cause i usually let my laptop on with the lid shut when i sleep to help me finish some downloads.
-
I use it between classes, much faster than fully shutting down/booting up. Plus I have my laptop set to hibernate/unhibernate when the lid is closed/opened when it's on battery, so class ends, I shut the lid, shove it in my bag and go.

Anyone know where it stores the info on the hard drive when in hibernation? After a while wouldn't you think that it would take up alot of space? OR does it automatically re-write over the previous hibernation mode? You think that it would be who knows.
Thanks -
Root directory, 'hiberfil.sys' uses the same one over and over.

I use hibernation sparingly with my notebooks. I've found that sometimes my notebook doesn't fully go into hibernation, and just sit at "Windows is Preparing to Hibernate". I've found this to be a fire hazard, especially at night, if left on a wooden desk or coffee table, with the notebook plugged into an outlet or even on batteries. I usually do a full shut down so I hear the Windows chime, knowing my notebook shuts down fully.
-
Yeah, same here. The battery life is greatly increased when you use Hibernation. And you don't have to completely shut down. Cool beans.

I've been hibernating lately...it's nice because it's a speedy startup (and really the shutdown isn't bad either even though it writes to the hard drive). Saves a little battery not having to spin up a boot.
xAMDvsIntelx - How hot do your laptops get idling to cause a wood desk to be a fire hazard? Just curious because I use a wood table and I barely feel heat when I pick my laptop up after running. -

They are working on better hibernation modes. In the future, hibernation will use no power at all.
In 1998 you could let your notebook on for 3 months on hibernation before the battery was empty.
Today it is around a year. In the feature maybe a few years. I like technology.

How in the he11 does hibernation use up battery, the machine is completely off isn't it? I can see maybe standby going 3 months to a year, but it's still maintaining enough power to keep things in RAM. But if it's writing to the hard drive and shutting down, that can't use power, does it?
-
it great use it all the time
-
After your computer goes into hibernation and you come back, how do you get it out of hibernation? e.x. shake the mouse or press enter? i have no clue! Thanks!
-
Typically gotta hit the power button. Hitting the mouse or enter is when you come out of 'standby'...those are two different monsters.
-
Be careful with more than 1GB ram- you need a patch from MS.
Ivan -
I have 2 GB of ram, and use hibernation all the time!
What patch is it that I should install? What happens if I don't install it?
Haven't had any issues so far with hibernation mode....
Thanks -

i only hibernate in the winter

I never did use hibernate until I came across this the other day, and decided to try it.
Now I use it all the time instead of shutting down completely; it's soo much faster than powering on from a completely off state. -
Yep, I'm trying to remember to hibernate all the time and maybe shut all the way down once a week...just to flush things out or something. I don't know...maybe I don't even have to do that...haha...I noticed one other poster saying he reboots when things get sluggish.
-
I've never used hibernate before, but might try it and see how I get on with it.
-
Hibernate is a great option. When is using standby good?
-
I don't use hibernate at all. I use standby. But My laptop is a desktop replacement, and is always plugged in. I heard that hibernate has caused a lot of problems...
