Hi, could somebody tell me how Live Messenger operates its logging feature. I used to use this on my system but went back to MSN 7 since WLM crashes my computer.

There are two questions I need answered

    1) Is the logging feature independent for each user's login? As in if account A had it enabled, could account B disable it?

    2) What is the default behaviour for logging on a new installation?

I say this because I had a rather sensitive conversation on somebody elses' system I don't want read.

To begin I will answer your second question; as far as I know when you first run WLM, conversation logging is not enabled you will have to go and enable it yourself in the options.

The first question is a tricky one I really don't think if you have it disabled in your account and another user has it enabled that it will be enabled on both but I am not completely sure of this.

However I can tell you what to do when you are finished your conversation and you want to check if the conversation was logged.
Go into the WLM menu then tools then down to options then onto the tab marked messages look to see where the conversation logs are being stored on the harddrive (default is my received files in my documents) But check to see where the logs are being stored as some people change from the default location. Messenger stores logs as XML documents which can be opened in any browser.

Oh on a side note most likely microsoft will eventually force you to go upgrade to WLM (messenger 8) as new features come online in future releases.

    Hope this helps you...

Great answer Evolution. I use logging on my own computer, but since it is a single user environment I wasn't sure of the effects this had on other accounts. I used to use Live Messenger from one of the first Betas, but for some reason my computer totally crashes when I use it now.

Pity I won't know if the other person has seen the conversation until it is too late! Optimism is the course for the day!

I just did some checking and I don't think you have anything to worry about...

You see I have 2 different email accounts that I log on to using WLM and I have the setting on the main one set to record conversations however when I logged into my second email account the record conversations option in WLM was not enabled now these are 2 different logons using the same WLM in one windows account.

I also checked on my dad's desktop which has 4 different windows user accounts (all admin by the way) now I have logging turned on in my account under WLM and when I logged into my father's account his WLM doesn't have it enabled.

So there you go it appears to be independent and based on the options set by the user who is using the program at the current moment. And as I said to you the default is not to record conversations so you have nothing to worry about...
