Don't know if this been brought up recently or not.
I just noticed my GTX 460M does not downclock to 2D frequencies when Live Messenger is running.
You can check this by the graph monitoring in NVIDIA Inspector.

Windows live messenger is a piece of crap imo, uses way to much ressources and has other issues I don't like.
I'd recommend going with something lighter, like Miranda, a really fine open source client for Windows live messenger and a lot other IM services. -
work fine here and why do people complain about things using resources, that what there there for to be used
no point having 4/8 gig etc and not using it
i have it on what i use it and off when i don't so what resources it uses are released anyway so where is the problem -
"No point having 4/8 gig etc and not using it" ... Just because you have a powerful system it doesn't mean software should really use all the ressources of it. A program should only utilize what it really needs and nothing more. Otherwise it wouldn't run on netbooks and similar. Also think about battery life etc.
Fine that it works for you, but this doesn't change the fact that it's poorly coded and that there are far better alternatives. -
Well, most of the newer MS application are partially 3d accelerated. MS are starting make the push making all their apps render through them, despite how useless and waste of effort is. Perhaps, they are thinking ahead by 20 years.
Let him use the messenger, he could be using a feature that isn't available in alternatives. -
well apparently it's a driver issue I guess.
Windows Aero runs finee with 2D clocks so it definitely something wrong with WLM or the beta 270.51 driver.
For me, WLM is fine. I will look into Miranda tho since I've heard this name quite a lot of times. Does it support video chat with another WLM client? -
see now everyone has an opinion
if you want alternative to MS messenger go for Trillian specially the next release 5 still beta
but i won't replace ms messenger with any im -
the driver your using is a beta
try one that isnt
its not even ramping up the clock speed when on
yes your system shouldnt be using all your resources but your making it out to worse than it is
with everything i have running and with msn running im using 1820mb out of my 6gb
so where is the problem -

everyone ranting about gpu use.
guess what system is made for fast and efficient drawing? the gpu, or the cpu? the GRAPHICS processing unit, or the CENTRAL processing unit?
and once you stop guessing which one is better (as in faster AND more efficient) for GRAPHICS (which every ui consists of), then you'll understand the decision.
i'm sorry for those who got nvidia gpu's and now moan how inefficient it is to deliver what it should: efficient performance.
