I am using the latest MSN build and it has a very puzzling problem.
1. I have a contact, [email protected]
2. I never see the contact online, yet i've added them.
3. They say, they can see me online on their yahoo.
4. When we talk...i talk to [email protected].
5. This is the same name I have with the address @ yahoo.fr.
6. This contact is always offline.
7. I tried adding the [email protected], but it does not exist.
Basically, I can never open a conversation with them. If I write at the [email protected] never get the message. They have to open a convo, with the magic offline [email protected].
This contact does not exist under the yahoo.com domain.
How is this possible and what can I do?
I've deleted and added them 20 times. Same thing.

may be he blocked you..
or may be the problem lies in "xxx"..lol. -
I am not blocked and the xxx is not the real id. Its just the way I wrote it...but it is the same on both the fr and com domain.

I ran into this problem once before. I never really resolved it, but when we both moved to using a web messenger service (Meebo) the problem went away. It led me to believe it was a problem with a proxy or firewall at one of the ends. Since I was at home and they were at work, we leaned towards it being something with their corporate firewall. Strangely it did only affect communication between Yahoo and MSN Messenger clients.

Its the most annoying thing in the world. I don't really fancy meebo....All my contacts are on hotmail...so moving on YM, dunno...don't like the platform...never did.... -
Wishmaker - try ICQ - and then the Russian Client QIP 80xx builds - better than the 9xxx builds.
Its number based - but QIP installed on a USB drive can be carried around.
It works in most places too
(all you need to sign up is your e-mail adress I think) -
. Will see the possibilities

I updated MSN and still no joy

get the account to use live messenger including a live (or hotmail) address?
yahoo.. terrible
edit: now that i think of it: has he registered and "unlocked" his account for live messenger? foreign adresses have to get "validated" to be real adresses and not spammers somehow (no clue how). and as yahoo.fr is a terrible spam source.. -
. This person does not exist, yet we are talking
. The address is valid, its been in use for years.

it's still a problem of yahoo and not live messenger. they've messed up the fr and com connection in their live-binding somehow.. no clue.

you're not alone at least, from what i've googled. the fr/com mix-up is strange. but the yahoo-users-are-offline-but-talk-to-me is quite common.

You could try Pidgin.
