There should be a registry key to simply change the OS name... :D ;)

Sure he can. He could wipe his drive and install ME, but there's only a snowball's chance in hell he would find ME drivers for that new machine.

Why on Earth would anyone want to install such a horrible OS?

what does everyone have against vista? ive used it from day back in beta testing for microsoft, and i think its the best microsoft os ever.

PCPAL, you will have way more problems running windows ME than you ever will having windows vista. It is my non expert opinion ;) to advise you against doing such a horrible thing to your computer. If your having problems with vista, say what they are. We can likely help you figure them out.

ME wasn't that much more error-prone than Windows 98, but Windows 98 had horrible stability to being with. Explorer would randomly "commit an illegal action" or "page fault" with a nice blue screen of death.

I know you did not say Windows ME. That is/was and will always be the worst OS ever made. It should be a crime that you still have that thing. Revert to Windows 2000 if you want to go back. That OS of rock solid and stable.

This is going to sound pretty weird but I had a laptop running Windows ME for a few months and it wasn't utter hell. I'm not doubting everyone else's experience. I just danced through the raindrops until the next machine which had 2000 on it.

I have been of the opinion for about twenty years now that we have never seen a widely distributed first rate operating system. Most of the ones available today (Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.) are third rate. There have been a few instances of second rate operating systems (some versions of SunOS were definitely a cut above what was going around) but not many.

It seems that the bottom line is that making money and quality operating systems do not mix.

See, it is possible! Nice cosmetic makeover... :)

Who in his or her right mind would want to install Windows ME over Windows Vista Ultimate?
