This is an Acer 4300 series laptop running Vista (up to date) and Windows Mail (outlook express thing for Vista)

I was called to work on it because windows mail wouldn't open email attachments. Right clicking on the attachment and going to "open" would do nothing - no hard drive activity, no spike in cpu usage ... just nothing.

We tried saving the attachments to the desktop, but it just says the command failed to execute.

After doing some research online, it appears to be a vista update. But the update only affects Windows Mail and the solution is to download and install Windows Live Mail - fine I will do that.

Turns out anything downloaded in IE will not save. It will download, but will not transfer from the cache.

Ended up setting her up with the webmail (isp email). It will show atatchments such as pictures but if a video file has to be downloaded it will download but not save to desktop or open

Now I suspect all three of these are related but cant' put my finger on it (not a vista expert)

    Anyone have any ideas?

If I were to guess it has to do with security settings and user rights.

Also - are you running any Security Suites, anti virus software?

Where would the security settings and user rights be?

There was the included Norton (came with the laptop) and AVG. I uninstalled both and rebooted hoping that this would help with the problem.

Is this IE7 or IE8? When right clicking on a link, is the save as option available? If you run IE as an administrator, can you save files?

IE7. Rightclick and Saveas is an option. It downloads, and shows moving the file to the desktop (or location I saved) but it does not show up. I have not tried running as administrator.

However the users account is an administrator.

The problem is the computer is 20 miles away. Trying to get all bases covered before going back again.

IE is not run as an administrator - you'll have to right click and "run as administrator" to actually enable it.

You could try installing CCleaner and running it to clean up the registry. You could also try installing Firefox to see if it also has trouble downloading files. You can also create a new user and see if that user also has problems downloading files.
