Hi, and thanks for taking time to read this as I’m in need of your help.

I have a Toshiba P200, Vista Home Premium, Tiscali as my ISP, Norton Internet Security for AV and firewall, and am accessing my broadband via Ethernet to a Belkin ADSL router (and occasionally a Siemens router) and I’m experiencing some strange happenings with Windows Mail.

In short I can receive mail with no problems, but when I send the mail it stays in the outbox despite the Send Immediate option being checked or pressing the Send/Receive button. When I exit Windows Mail the mail is sent straight away, and is in the Sent Mail folder when I restart Windows Mail.

So why do I think there’s a problem with the laptop. Well, I’m fortunate enough to have a friend who has an ASUS laptop, where all of the above can be replicated. Guess what, Windows Mail sends the mail exactly as it should (on my Tiscali account and on my network, through my router and ISP etc.), so I conclude that the only difference is that my laptop is a P200.

I have called Tiscali who confirmed that all my Mail settings were OK, POP, SMTP etc, which I’d expect (as they work on my friend’s laptop), and they advised I contact Microsoft, which I did, and since the P200 has Vista pre-installed they say I have to contact Toshiba, and here I am.
My P200 has been restored to factory settings, and I have tried to get this working without Norton IS, and no firewalls (Vista and router), but no luck.

Any ideas would be much appreciated and if I find out by other means, I’ll post back with outcome. If the answer is already out there, I apologise for being too dumb to locate it and beg your patience.

    Many thanks.

I just had this same issue today, i can recieve mail but i cant send at all. Its the first time ive set up my work email into my laptop using Windows Mail.

The first solution i found was to open firewall port 25 (STMP) but it didnt work at all.

Its a software issue i believe, so this belongs in the software section

If you use another client like Mozilla Thunderbird does it work properly?

EDIT: another thought, do you have all of the latest Windows updates installed?

In your case, it's probably your ISP blocking the port 25 to reserve for your ISP's own SMTP servers only. This is a very common practice with many ISPs that I've seen. Try port 587 instead or check with your IT guys at work, they should have a second port opened, normally it's port 587. Port 587 is a very common alternative SMTP port, all the mail/web hosting companies that I used before have this second port 587 opened, because like I said it is very common that your local ISP will reserve the port 25 for their own STMP servers.

Somehow, I don't think it's a server name or port setting: if it were, it would never send the mail. (Computers I see with that kind of problem often have mail stuck in the Outbox for weeks). Something is broken in the Windows Mail settings.

    Try this:
--Create another user account on the laptop.
--Log in and set up your Email on it.

In trinity18's case, I agree. My reply was for flipfire's case. ;)

Thanks for your interest in my problem and for your advice.
Tiscali confirmed that SMTP goes on port 25, which is why they're insisting that it's a Microsoft problem, but this problem only manifests itself on the Toshiba P200 and not the ASUS. Also, as the mail is sent on exiting Vista Mail, the SMTP config must be acceptable. It's as though it doesn't even get a chance to leave the Outbox. This is a clean machine, no firewall at the time of testing, and all updates applied.
Have tried setting up several accounts some with the same settings and others with various options, all to no avail.
Giving up isn't in my dictionary and I'll soon be taking a screwdriver to that laptop !
    Thanks.

I found another person with the same problem as yours:

    http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3208423.php

It seems like it's either some 3rd party security software conflict or a bug with Windows Live Mail. When you said you tried without Norton IS, did you uninstall Norton IS or just exited the program? Cause even if you just exited Norton IS, there might still be other Norton services running in the background.

I hate to sound like a pain, but why don't you just use another program?

I'm rapidly coming round to thinking of ditching Vista Mail for another.
From an interest point of view, I have no other AV and although I have Norton IS it hasn't been re-installed.
Thanks, Stewie, for reference to other forum, which confirms very similar problem.
I'm happy to close this now and say thanks all for your advice.

I think you should give another mail program a shot, cause the current WL Mail is still kinda buggy. I installed WL Mail on my dad's laptop, and quite frankly, OE 6 worked better, now I gave him Outlook 2007 instead. For something free, I think you should try Mozilla Thunderbird, heard quite a lot of good things about it.
