After setting up windows media player on my laptop, i went to play a song and got spammed with 'you do not have the rights to play this file'. Same for 90% of my songs, that are sitting there, in full, right there on my hardrive.

    Omg frustration!!

SO to hell with microsoft i want to know whats the best software for playing music? I already have GOM player, but i want something with a full music interface

    What do you guys use?

    p.s. apart from itunes

    Nothing beats VLC Media Player!

It can play anything at very high quality and little system resources

If your looking for something that's not Itunes, I'd say go with winamp or VLC. They are both pretty great players and are pretty friendly when adding different or custom audio codecs.

i use zune for audio and photos and VLC for video. i love both for what i use them for.

i have used media monkey but when compared to zune for audio, its very clunky and hard to use and hard on the eyes. just not as refined.

VLC is just plain simple. does the job but i have no idea how it is for media management as i just associate video files with VLC.

For a large music collection that is properly tagged and organized - Foobar

To just play some files or a folder of music - Winamp

foobar out of the box is pretty bleh,

once you customize it and add some plugins is when it really shines.

case in point here is how mine is setup:

I have tabbed filters for genre/artist/album so I can find any music I want depending for the mood I am in.

Want to hear my favorite band? Just go to that artist and let it play all songs from that artist on random.

Dont want to hear just one band but a full genre of music (what I usually do) I just pick a genre and let it play anything under that genre.

Likewise can do just an album if I want.

Got cover art for everything for good visual reference to material, small one for the library and larger image for the now playing song.

My seekbar is a waveform so that I can skip any dead spots in a song or find a part of a song I like easily via visual information.

On the left I have a detailed file info so I know if I am listening to a FLAC file or AAC, the bitrate, and of course the artist, album, and song title.

I just use iTunes for music. I use VLC media player for videos and movies. Finally, I use the built in Windows Live Photo Gallery for pictures.
