I dont know why but whenever I double-click something, say, a music file or a video file, the default program its suppose to open with is Windows Media Player.

All of a sudden now, WMP refuses to acknowledge that I want it to play something. So, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't even open up. So what I have to do is actually manually open WMP by clicking on the quickbar icon, then double-clicking the file to play. THEN it plays...

Also, if I right-click on the file and tell it to open with WMP, it gives me this:

    The heck?

try setting wmp as your default for playing mp3's.

    1. go to control panel-programs-default programs.

    2. choose "set your default programs"

    3. click on wmp in the list on the left, then click on "choose defaults for this program"

    4. make sure that the checkbox for MP3 is checked, you may want to uncheck it and checkmark it again, then click save.

(Almost) the same problem happened to me, the WMP was set to be the default player of the video files. But instead of the error that you get, it used to open the "Open with" prompt everytime, when clearly, I had chose WMP as the default player. Sadly, there is no stand-alone setup of WMP for Windows Vista, so I had to do a complete format. If you're using Windows XP, thank the Lord and re-install it again, maybe it'll rectify itself. If you're using Windows Vista, use your back-up and do a system restore, and if you don't have a back-up, welcome to the club. :)

    No good....

I mean, I can still play things with WMP. Its just I will have to open it up first then click on the file I would want to play. A good 2-3 seconds wasted..

It was same for me. My solution helped me, and will prove a lot better as a long term solution as well.

EDIT: Wow! Who is that lady in your avatar? Seems both out avatars have something in common! Shhhh!

Hah, I actually don't know her name. Wish I did.

But about WMP, Im going to do a reinstall sometime later on this year or beginning of next so eh, I'll live with it for now.

That is unless there is another solution...

What version of WMP are you running? When did this start? What did you install/remove just prior to WMP refusing to open media files?

Also, have you Googled for an answer yet? I searched for this:

windows media player "the parameter is incorrect"

And I got quite a few hits. Perhaps one of them will help.

The latest one. 11 I believe? This started sometime last 2 weeks. I did not install/remove anything.

Although this could have something to do with it ...

I think a week ago, I tried to see if there was an update by going to Help>Check for updates.

Nothing happened after that except a slight freeze.

    So now, this happens.

Have you tried doing a system restore? If not, pick a restore point from before you checked for updates.

If you can't reformat now, and you can't reinstall WMP 11 (which you can try, just download the installer), and none of the Google search links help, then I think you're out of luck.
