I'm having some issues with Windows media player on my brand new laptop. Oops.

The issue arises when playing certain (divx, I think) encoded video files. What happens is that it seems incapable of matching up the red, green and blue colors to create a full-color image. It instead looks like a black and white picture with splashes of red or blue offset from it about halfway up the image.

I've reinstalled both my divx codecs and WMP, and I've tried both WMP 10 and 11. Also, the same videos play perfectly in Windows Media Center, so whatever the problem is, it's not affecting that.

I really appreciate any help you all can give.

    Thanks!

Why dont you just download the free DivX player for your DivX files?

Sometimes, WMP gives weird errors and problems.

I have downloaded the DivX player and it works well... I guess I just have some strange attachment to WMP. Odd, considering I'm no huge fan of the Microsoft beast.

    Thanks.

I'd probably still suspect a codec issue. Try installing gspot from

    http://www.divx-digest.com/software/gspot.html

Opening the video file in gspot will tell you whether the necessary codecs for a particular video file is installed or not

I had that problem recently, too. First thing I'd reccomend trying is to go into your WMP settings, go to the "performance" tab, click "Advanced," and untick "Use Video Mixing Renderer." This will cause video to be decoded by your graphics card drivers rather than by the Windows renderer, which fixed the problem for me on two computers having the problem.

Try downloading xp codec pack or klite codec pack, which might help with your video problems.

Thanks, Lowlymarine. That did the trick! Thanks to everyone else who responded, too. I might check those other things just to see what the problem actually was.

Yeah, right...Installing a codec pack is never necessary or recommended. Use GSpot and just get the codec you need.

A much better player for video is VLC media player. I have my movies for VLC and the WMP_11 for all my music.

IMO, VLC is sluggish and its hard to get the slider to where you want it. YOu have to drag it, which I do not like. I prefer MPC (w/CCCP) as it loads up fast, and you just click any where on the slider to tell the player where to start. Other than that VLC is just a backup player for thoes broken or corrupt video files.
