OK, so I received a blues screen warning of a memory error. I rebooted and then ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic. It reboots the machine and runs then returns back to windows. It places a small icon in the System tray (aka "notification area") that supposedly lets you view the results (see attachment). Problem is the icon does NOTHING. If you hover over it, it identifies itself as "Windows Memory Diagnostic". Right clicks, or left clicks do zip, zero, nada, zilch.
I was able to go into the event logs to see the diagnostic results (it found no errors). But how do I make this damn icon go away. It survives a reboot. I found many other folks (via Google) with similar questions. The only solutions offered are to go in to the "Notification Area" configuration dialog and hide it. Sorry that is treating the symptoms not the disease. Another was to go thru some total reset of the notification icons, complete with registry manipulation. That seems a bit much.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Check msconfig and see if it's starting something up along those lines?

It may be worthwhile, telling you how to actually reset the icons, not just hide them -

Well yesterday after a reboot, suddenly a balloon popped up over the icon and told me no errors had been found. I clicked the X in the balloon and the icon disappeared. (I rarely reboot, but have done at least three or four since this icon appeared.)
Very odd.
