i know there are prob a bunch of threads on this but I coudlnt find my answer. I've searched everywhere on google and microsoft threads but I still cant complete the SP3 update installation. I have an ASUS W3J running the standard xp pro with sp2. The problem I keep running into is when the setup is "finishing" which is about 2/3 of the bar my computer crashes and reboots to a blue error screen which flashes for half a second. Not sure what it says cause it disappears too fast but the first line is something along the line of "could not complete setup - it was interrupted - a problem was detected". After that it reboots to another screen which restores previous settings getting rid of SP3 and such which takes forever. Anyway ive been trying for the last 4 days trying but failing with the same problem. From what ive read in various forums ive tried various solutions such as : disabling spyware, antivirus, firewall, usb devices, error checking the c drive, reseting the registry, updating bios and prob some other stuff i cant remember. This is really frustrating that I cant get this to work. Please help if you can. I need this problem fixed because I'm going back to college in a week or so, I cant access the internet there without the latest windows updates. HELP PLEASE!

I always apply SP3 immediately & only after a fresh install of Windows. I haven't had or heard of anyone running into trouble when doing so.

    a correction/additional info
I disabled the auto reboot on error so I could get a good look at the message. It says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down ......"

Run chkdsk /r to detect and resolve any file system structural damage.

    Also, are minidumps enabled ??

    (Which HDD ??)

    my HDD is a Fujitsu MHV2100AH 100GB 5400 RPM P-ATA Hard Drive.
is that check disk command the same thing as manually going to the C drive and doing the error checking scan cause if it is, I already did it.
And no idea about minidumps. How do I check.

Ok, boot in safe mode and then try updating. Make sure there is no other program running in the background....
And to check if minidumps are enabled, go back to the window where you unchecked the option of Automatic Restart on BSOD, and check what is displayed in Write Debugging Info....
Also download this diagnostic tool, and run a comprehensive test/surface scan....

Try installing the latest chipset drivers, so the IDE/ATA controller drivers are also updated.

I uninstalled my anti virus, firewall, and spywaredoctor, and tried it in safe mode and it worked. :) Not sure if all that was necessary but o well.

It was just probably your antivirus or firewall screwing up the install....(and yeah, uninstalling all that stuff wasn't necessary at all, but at least it worked ;))
