I have disabled it..but if its gonna have better CPU usage then i ll try it out ..since i hate going to the folders these days...too much browsing.
How many of u use Windows Search btw?
-
-
I use it quite a bit. Stopped using my start menu and just typing the first few letters.
Windows Search 4.0 uses slightly more of the CPU than the old version. Not enough to notice though -
Hm. It has to reindex everything, so do you think the increased CPU use might be from that?
-
Maybe I'll download this and try it out again. I rarely use search though.
-
I'm not sure how much better 4.0 is but I really like Vista search, very useful for me since I have a ton of documents for work.
If it were just personal stuff, no biggie, not necessary. -
I keep my Windows Search service disabled, which slows thing down a bit when searching, but the performance gain is high enough for me to deal with it. I rarely use anything but the Start menu search anyway. But I must admit, Start menu search does work wonderfully.
-
I use search if I can't find a program quickly. It is very helpful.

Thanks for the info, although I much prefer the likes of Launchy or a dock. Nothing comes close to GnomeDo in Linux though.
-
Very rarely do I use windows Search. It's like I always know where my programs are and where they should be.
-
Ditto
So I have to enable Windows Search in Services to see the difference?
-
let me see how Vista search is..i never used it. -
I have been using this since they first released couple of months ago. As long as you let the indexer do its job initially to index whatever you have selected it should work fine without any hard drive trashing. The search results are also a bit faster but nothing darmatic. Honestly, if you are using WS3 it is definitely worthwhile upgrading to WS4. If you are not using start menu search feature then you can skip this one.

Hey guys, for those of you who use Vista Search (in the start menu)...you should REALLy try Start++:
http://brandontools.com/blogs/news/archive/2008/04/25/start-0-8-1.aspx
It integrates google search and a bunch of other goodness right into Start Search, and made by a guy on the Windows Developer Team...pretty nifty. -

Guys, search is a LOT more than just the location of programs. It is much more useful for finding documents or more specifically references inside documents. I use it a lot. Mainly for finding things like: where did I mention reorganizing a particular database for a client. Search will find all of the documents, emails and even attachments to emails where this was referenced. VERY POWERFUL.
After you let it do the initial index of your drive(s), the new 4.0 does much less of what some folks called "thrashing" of the hard drive. It's very quick and consumes very little resources, memory or cpu.

Question: I have it disabled since the day one I got vista for myself. I have never used it. Doesnt it take too much hard drive space also, if not not much cpu or memory??
What are the advantages and disadvantages of turning this on?? -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
It does not take up that much hard drive space in my opinion. And it certainly does NOT take up much CPU or memory, once the initial index is built. It will eat a LOT of CPU and memory as it builds the initial index. But once that is done, it only has to update the index when a new file or email is added or edited and even then the new 4.0 version does this quickly and is then out of the way cpu and memory use wise. It does NOTHING when the are no new or changed files to index.
The advantage is instantaneous searches of the CONTENTS of files, emails and email attachments. The disadvantages are it consumes a lot of resources building the initial index (but that is a one time event, so let it run overnight and you will never know it). And it consumes a small amount of resources when new files and emails are added or when they are changed. The new version does NOT, as some folks think, consume resources at any other time.

I don't know near as much as Scud when it comes to puters (you should listen to Scud =D ), but anecdotally, Vista Search does an excellent job. I never notice it, I've never experienced the "thrashing" some complain about.
I'll stress what has already mentioned, it ALSO indexex the CONTENTS of files. So if you had an address list that you made in excel, but you forgot if it was on your hard-drive or not...type in the person's name and a second or two later, the search will pull up the file for you to open and enjoy.
P.S. I would recommend updating to 4.0
Windows Search 4.0 ..the BIG update
