I have the opportunity to download a copy of Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition via Microsoft Dreamspark. However, I am currently using Windows XP Professional on my desktop.

    My question is:

    1. What's Windows Server 2008 like? Is it more similar to Vista than XP? What's the difference?

    2. Will Windows Server 2008 be a viable option to replace Windows XP as an operating system for a desktop?

    3. Will any program that works with Vista/XP work with Windows Server 2008?

    Thanks a lot!
    Leon

Oh, and is it faster and more stable than Vista/XP?

You don't need a server class OS in your personal PC. Server 2008 is more like Vista.

It is more like vista, but do not run it instead of vista/xp. Run it because you want to learn how to use it or if you want to actually use it as a server.

Even if you have no plans for it now, dl it, burn it and save it because you might want to later.

I am running server 08, it can be configured to be like vista.
However i prefer it over vista home premium, as many features on any version of vista which is not ultimate is intentionally crippled by microsoft.

As for stability, it seems slightly better than vista. You may have some issues
regarding drivers but very few as vista drivers seem to work fine for most hardware.

Also I prefer server 08 to vista as many features are off and uninstalled by default.
