Hi,
Firstly, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post.
Secondly, I have HP 2700t series. and I'm still using the Vista Home Premium preloaded. I got this laptop like about a month ago, and for some reason most of the updates are not installing, and mostly fail.
My question is, if I were to do a clean install and re-install everything, will it be possible for the windows update to actually have a success? Because right now I have like 11 updates that are not installing.
Any Help would be greatful.![]()

That would probably work. Im assuming youve restarted... But thats the only thing i can think of doing.
Yeah, i think it should be in the Windows and Software Catagory - A mod will move it. -
umm.. have you try quitting any/most program to the barebone necessary. make sure you set your firewall to allow and/or reset its rule settings, or in fact, it might be easier to just turn it off.
-
Check your services for BITS. If it is not running, start the service and change it to automatic if it is disabled.
Then try to install your updates.
BITS> Background Intelligent Transfer -
I had a problem with updates not installing a month or so ago right after a clean install.
I googled around for a while and found a solution. I can't find the forum I had originally read if from, but the instructions were the same as on this site as I recall:
http://www.lancelhoff.com/2008/06/22/microsoft-windows-updates-fail-to-install/
Now I feel I should mention, that I have absolutely no clue why doing this process works. All I know is that it worked for me. I assume this is a safe procedure, only because it worked perfectly for me without issues. -
Have you tried installing the updates while in Safe Mode?
-
the regsvr32 something.dll commands register those dll files for the os... I think they make Windows "see" the files and reload them for the relevant processes..............I think
-
The link you gave me, I tried, and "regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll, regsvr32 wucltui.dll, and regsvr32 wuweb.dll" would not load module.
I tried in SafeMode, but it would not connect to the internet. -
BITS is running but still no good.
-
you have to start safe mode with networking... to get internet in safemode.
-
Do the updates get downloaded, and then fail to install..??
Or they don't get downloaded in the first place..?? -
Step 1 Delete the temp folder
---------------
Please delete all the files in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\wuaudnld.tmp
Step 2 Reregister the following dll files:
---------------
1. Click start, Click Run, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks) and press enter.
2. Type the following commands and press enter after each command in the command line:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
Restart the computer and try installing the Windows Updates again -
Well the way I see it is that I have the updates showing on the Windows Update. It is not downloading, nor it is installing.
I went into Program Files, and I can not find the Windows Update Folder. -
Run - At the Run screen write " cmd" than press Enter button, there it will show you the Command Prompt window.
At the command prompt window write " ipconfig/flushdns", and press Enter
Type net stop wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
Now try the site again.
Also reconfigure or update your firewall program.
Double-check the Proxy/Firewall settings. Add the following urls to the exception list within your Firewall/Proxy:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
Automatic Updates and Cryptographic Services also MUST be enabled
Also go to "Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, Pop-Up Blocker, Settings...and made sure the following are added:
*.microsoft.com
*.download.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Also as a last resort, go to TCP-IP Properties, Advanced, DNS, and made sure all defaults are chosen. (Append Primary & Suffix radio button is checked, everything else is blank) This assumes you are receiving a DHCP address. Unplug & Plug your Network cable back out & in, so it gets a new DNS suffix with the DHCP address. -
The Windows update folder is hidden. You need to enable viewing hidden folders in the folder options.
Well there is a big difference between the two. The recommendations we've been giving are generally effective for updates that successfully downloaded, but failed installing.
Pay attention to it as it tries to run the update. Does it indeed fail prior to downloading?
EDIT: The advise Angad just wrote out is what will work if it indeed is failing prior to downloading. So that should work. -
Okay, as of now I am running the Windows Update and it is showing that it's downloading but still at 0% and after a few minutes or so it will disappear. So I have no idea if it's installing or not.
It does take a long time, but it never install and it always fail. So I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here.
Thanks for the link, I will take a look at and see why it's not working. If the problem still occurs, I might as well try doing a clean install. but I only have the recovery disk, not the Clean one itself. -
Here is something else that I found that may help.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
Is it giving you any messages or error codes when you try to install? -
I had the very same issue........just like anothe rmember this was after a clean install. I called Dell support and they ran a reg cleaning piece of software ( sorrry cant remeber what it was called ) my machine now updates with no worries, if i can remember i will post the app name later
-
I get error codes like "80070246"
-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939399/en-us
This applies to the error code that you posted. -
Okay, I found out why most of the updates failed to instal. It was because one of the chipset drivers, the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset driver. And according to the instruction, if I had this installed it would not let me install SP1.
I did a clean install that came with SP1, so now I can not intall Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset. Plus I don't think it's necessary to have this chipset. -
Well, the chipset drivers provide updated drivers for various system devices (a pain to list all), so I think it is necessary, unless you already have the system devices up and running the way they should be....
