Windows Update wont work

I did a fresh install of W7 Pro RTM x64 last night, it activated/authenticated with microsoft fine but when i try update using Windows Update it keeps giving me an error.

My internet connection is fine and ive tried with the firewall disabled.

Error Code 80240038

"Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

 

Most likely short term error due to update server or a communication error.

Try again today.

You can also try disabling "GIVE ME UPDATES FOR MICROSOFT PRODUCTS..." in Windows update settings (these are non-OS updates, like for Office) and see if that results in the OS updates coming through

 

Dont think its a server down error. I cant seem to use Driver update either. It feels like its not even trying to connect or its not resolving. The checking for update bar just idles for about 2 mins till it gives me that error.

I tried your suggestion but with no luck. I cleaned out my hosts file with no luck either.

After reading up i think it might be AVG blocking it even though its not a firewall.

Is there a stand alone installer for the updates? Im stuck with build 7600, the one with the memory leak issue.

So has theres only been like 3-5 updates since the RTM release? That doesnt sound right.
