There was one benefit that i did notice between the two settings - with the pagefile on, the system was cutting down my processor speed to less than 2 ghz where when it was disabled, it used all of it. My test is only one test and others will have to be willing to conduct the same tests as i did to make a more conclusive argument for or against.
Using a different Defragmenter is not a bad thing, that is an incorrect teaching. The Windows Defragmenter is good but not on par as some of the others that are on the market. Out of the box vanilla Windows is not always practical. Microsoft is good at designing operating systems, but not at making all the apps that are required to run it. They are not good at predicting what a minority will see as necessary or not. Microsoft designs OSs that work for a majority of people with the features that most people will use. this also aplies to system settings. If you want to run Windows as Bill Gates intends, then do just that. I must admit though, they (Microsoft) have improved greatly over the years in regards to system tools, but using 3rd party programs does offer some advantages that the native windows programs do not.
The fact that Microsoft put system changes and tweaks into their system was so systems can be "fitted" to customize a system to the users preferences and usage. One of these is the choice to set your Processor to spend more resourses on either Programs or System Cache. Another is How to manage Windows Virtual memory. For many using these features as-is right-out-of-the-box is good for them, for others this is not so. I prefer not to put all my trust in just one company for how the OS should be configured and setup. Although this stance may seem to come from a state of distrust, it is not. This stance comes from hands-on experience and as well as what has been learned over the years from my own computing needs. But i am getting off topic here. Getting back to the system configuration settings; these are inherent system properties that were and are offered in the OS for getting better performance out of your system. These are not a do not touch, do not tamper. these things are not always the case. Now when i make these statements, I do not say this to the benefit of the person that goes to extremes, even deleting system files at whim, because he feel like it. i believe in balance. But I also believe that a balanced approach can lead to a far better computer experience as well as a life experience.

I would personally like to see more benchmarks by others that support or even oppose this controversial tweak. The addition of more removes the burden off of one set of tests and places it on a series, so that systems can be classified. If at the least, we will learn about improving computers that support pagefiles as well as those who disable theirs. More will also show whether the OS is really a factor or not and help determine whether this can/cannot be done in the Range of 2 - 4 GB RAM.
Windows Virtual Memory - Pagefile.sys and can it be safely disabled
