Windows Vista - Which Vista Edition is Right for You?
![]()
A lot has come up about the confusion of Windows Vista... such as
What versions are there?
What is the cost of each version?
Do all of the versions have Aero UI?
Is Vista coming with 32-bit or 64-bit editions?
Whats with the upgrade and free Vista coupons?
... etc.

(from ExtremeTech.. i put it into JPG format)
Whats the difference??
As you can see, there are a few things in common throughout the different editions:
- each edition will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit
- each edition fully support multi-core (multi-logical core) CPUs... lets get them quad-cores out for some fun.
- the 32-bit in all editions has a cap of 4 gigs of RAM (definitely improved on the previous 2.8 gig cap from previous Windows)
- the 64-bit editions start with a cap of 8gig of RAM, to a jaw-dropping 128 gigs.
- all of the normal stuff (which are not all that great anyways) is there for all versions: IE7, Windows Firewall/Defender, Media Player 11, etc...
The Basic Home edition is probably as low as it get, with NO Aero UI, and 1 physical CPU is supported... not too big of a deal since 1 physical CPU is currenty reaching the Quad-core level.
It might be worth it to Vista Home Premium for most of our purpose, and its pretty much the "bang for the buck" Vista edition.
Vista Free/Upgrade Coupons:
Microsoft, as well as the OEM systems (desktops and notebooks), is currently offereing free upgrade coupons and discount coupons for upgrading Windows XP to Windows Vista. It is definitely a good thing to get those coupons, although being free does not mean that the shipping is free. The Discount coupons are pretty valuable and help to get a considerably lower price when wanting to upgrade.
If you get a system now, make sure that you will be getting some sort of Vista upgrade coupon, because it's just the smart thing to do since Vista will come standard on the same systems within a month or two. You shouldn't have an issue when getting these systems from major resellers.
Hope this helps,
