    Greetings:

Given the desire to backup either to DVD Dual Layer (8.5 GB) or a WD passport drive, what backup software will work with either as targets for the backup (taking full advantage of dual layer DVD's) that runs well on Vista 64?

In addition to a daily or on demand backup, it would be nice if the software could also shadow copy (for lack of better words) files as they are changed (or shortly after they are changed).

Thank you for your time and recommendations.

What about the built-in backup software?

Agreed, the backup software in Vista business is very capable, it can even create full system image backups. :)

Vista by default shadow copies files in your Windows Folder and User folders once a day and at bootup. Technically, it creates shadow copies of changed files in these folders at every system restore. The previous versions tab (shadow copies of changed versions of the file) under the file properties is part of the system restore function.

I hope that makes sense. Shadow copies = previous version tab = system restore. If system restore is off, previous versions will not work. This is one of the built-in backup solutions in Vista, besides system image backup center.

I prefer a more robust automated backup solution, like Acronis True Image. It has a very capable scheduler that you can fire up every 30 mins for your important documents and every day for everything else.
