Checked the microsoft website and it says that it needs
40g of hd space and 15g of free space.

Does it mean that i constantly need 15g of available space for it to run smoothly?

ie my laptop is partitioned c:40g and d:80g and i have about normally between 8-13g of free space in c: Is that sufficient or will my windows run slightly slower? Thanks and appreciate the feedback.

The 15 GB free space is referring to the space needed to install Vista, which is an exaggeration in and of itself. My Windows folder almost takes up 8 GB. I would presume that they say 15 GB for two main reasons: Just to play it safe, and also to allow room for the pagefile, shadow copy, and system restore.

You should be fine with 8-13 GB of free space, especially if you limit the amount of space that those 3 aforementioned items take up.
