I installed the diskeeper lite version on my T61 Vista machine. I didn't like it so I uninstalled it, but now the default windows defragmenter won't work when I click on defragment under C: Properties. Can someone tell me how to re enable the built in defragmenter?
    Thank You

Well the built in defragmenter is made by Diskeeper, sounds like you removed the wrong Diskeeper files perhaps. I'm not sure how to re enable it in your scenerio short of a repair installation as it would need specific system files.

What happens when you go directly to the defrag executable at Windows\system32\dfrgui.exe and double-click on it?

Thanks for the responses guys. The program still exists in the system32 folder and I can run it from there. But it is not associated with windows, because of which when I click on defragment (c drive properties), it tells me that the defragmenter has been uninstalled and I need to install it again (perhaps referring to diskeeper lite).
    I found this page http://www.andreasroom.com/blog/archive/2004/01/18/defrag.aspx
but it is for fixing XP problem. Those two files mentioned on the page are not present in my system32 folder.
    Thanks for any help.

FYI, the Vista defragger is not made by DIskeeper (some previous Windows defraggers were, but not Vista’s). For anyone interested, another disk defragmenter for Vista – the first one certified by Microsoft for Vista – is PerfectDisk ( www.raxco.com).

PerfectDisk is awesome! But due to some reason I think it (the latest) doesn't work well on Vista. Then again, maybe my drive is already well defragged in the first place, because I run it on every Sunday , 3-4 times.

Diskeeper Lite is not certified for Vista AFAIK. Infact only the current Diskeeper versions ie. Diskeeper 2007 are Vista certified and guaranteed to run properly on Vista.

diskeeper is overrated from my personal experience. it's caused more trouble than its worth from my experience with it on my xp system. i have no reason to think it will do any better on vista.

I recommend you scrap whatever you have and get auslogics disk defrag. I've had the best experience with it.

But will it defrag and reorder the boot files like the built in defrag does?

im still in a deciding mode between diskeeper, perfect disk, and o&o defrag. i used to use diskeeper and did until the newest versions. im running perfect disk 8 now. tried o&o but it doesnt seem to do boot time defrag which i def want it to do to take care of the mft. i see we have a perfect disk employee on here that has posted. can they shed more light on some of the advantages and differences between the above? thanks
