Prices are the same as Buy.com's preorder prices, which are also up. Note no academic version or pricing yet.

I'm actually surprised at those prices, as I was thinking more expensive. Those prices are right on par with XP, and, believe it or not, Vista is an improvement (aside from the freshness).

ttupa, other than PERHAPS better security (although I'm not sure if that's proved out either way right now) what is better? I've only really heard of Aero as being better, and for the amount of general bloat that seems to be in vista I'm certainly not planning on it yet.

$259 for the ultimate edition? Ouch! That is a little rediculous. I have always thought MS was a little greedy releasing so many different versions anyway. Just make it simple. One that is exclusive to business and one for the consumers. No need for all these different versions that just confuse people.

I agree with your comment about too many versions (lets face it, the average user doesn't know the difference between XP Pro and XP Home, how are they going to understand 4 different versions of Vista), however given the outrageous Mac policies of charging for every tiny upgrade, well I'm not TOO unhappy with it (plus I'll get Vista next time I buy a new laptop, assuming it's out by 2010 lol!)

To be fair, Apple's release schedule is the same as MS'. People forget that Vista is VERY late. 3 years late. The normal release schedule for MS and Apple OS's is 1 1/2 to 2 years. Vista is just extrememly late. Also, each release of OS X actually includes a lot of changes and innovations. They are more than just service packs as many claim.

**EDIT** I also agree though, most people don't pay for the upgrade. The vast majority just get the current OS when they get a new computer.

Granted this is not of the highest reputation, the author wrote more than I'd care to. http://news.architel.com/2006/02/19/windows-vista-better-than-xp/

It includes Media Center, and it has a MUCH better user account management, and it has a lot more potential than XP does.

Plus, it should only be bloated if you want ultimate. If that's the case, you shouldn't have to worry about resource usage.

You're right about the release. AT RELEASE, it may not be the best or brightest. However, I see this being an eventually large improvement on XP.

Eh, well the majority of the reasons posted there don't really appeal so we'll have to see.

I guess I see this as a 95 to 98 type of bump, not a 98 to XP bump (Please note ME should never EVER be considered a working OS).

Mostly it seems to be "oh more bundled goodies" but I don't trust Microsoft to actually build a very good OS, let alone a good OS with lots of bundled software, most of the added pap just seems to be microsoft attempting to drive every other software vendor out of business by providing various things automatically.

Screw the quality. I just don't want an OS that is even more built to cater to user-unfriendly 'features' like DRM. I'll stick with XP or 2000 for my games, and use Linux for my real work, thank you very little. I like my computer to not be operated by software that's programmed to hate me.

Actually for some reason I can't wait until Vista comes out. I want to get my hands on the final version. Currently, I am installing the Vista RC1 on Microsoft's Virtual Machine :)
