Currently, I had been seeing a lot of people were not able to install SP2.
Moreover, it brought disaster for some people such as unable to switch-on laptop, unable to reformat, non-responding and many more.
Myself experienced godlike slow boot-up ad start-up in random time(sometime fast sometime slow but basically slow boot up).
I used compcln.exe.
I tried defrag my boot sector and all disk as well as registry cleaners.
It brings no changes.
Now, I have reformatted my laptop to original state. It is SP1 now. It works great. Fast boot up and fast startup.
I know some people don't have any problems with SP2. And enjoy SP2 very much.
Here, I would like to tell, be careful on SP2, it might ruin your PC.

I am having problems with frequent freezing upon reboot.

omg, it's some update that may affect some configurations badly, like, uhm, any?
how about trying to install sp2 now again, after you reformatted the laptop?
if a service pack fails to work properly, then it's your system that has some serious problem normally. better get it working somehow. -
My system have no problems.
SP2 caused problems for me.
I tried reformat and then install SP2 again. The result is the same.
SP2 is not suitable for every laptop I guess. -
For me ,browsing files and folders became faster. Also Explorer is able to remember the folder view settings.
-
So far the only "problem" I'm facing is slow boot time (1 min 5 secs vs 45 secs). Already did the necessary like defragging the hdd/registry, cleaning the registry, etc but to no avail. I might consider reverting to SP1 if the situation doesn't improve in a couple of days time.

i have such a laptop you have currently at home to setup, and it's...... not my thing..
funnily, my gf has some acer desktop, and it refuses to install xp sp3
some systems just don't work the way they should. it happens..
that's why i only buy business laptops. they normally have much less such issues.
at least it didn't freeze up like the sony from detlev -
It got nothing to do with my msconfig or service.msc!
I already lessen the startup and services to optimal state(mean good for my laptop).
No programs were eating my RAM and CPU usage.
It just start-up/boot-up slow down. -
SP2 updates without problem on my Vista Ultimate x32 and x64 systems.
-
I cannot open Services.msc and some other consoles.
What is wrong?
Thanks in advance.Attached Files:

That might be your "reader for those services.msc and so on" is corrupted.
Issit due to SP2? -
-
My services.msc is working fine. probably just be an issue with his shortcut.
cn_habs, go to C:\system32\ find services.msc and try running it from there. if all is well, just replace the non-working shortcut, or update it's "target" by right-clicking on the icon, then entering "Properties".
Otherwise, I can't say anything has improved for me. But that's not a bad thing. My list of Vista issues was extremely short. No installation issues for any of my 4 computers over here. -
-
I remembered I clicked on it before.
Can't recall. -
I uninstalled Vista after updating to SP2, I thought it was gonna bring things together but I experienced no enhancement of responsiveness/speed whatsoever, furthermore, my antivirus (NOD32) was not compatible with SP2, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit FTW now and very happy
-
SP2 only brought issues with my antivirus, other than that nothing else, no change in boot times, OS feels overall maybe a little faster.

No problems with SP2 here, so is SP2 available via Vista update yet, or is it only downloadable from Microsoft.
-
SP2 is lighting fast on my Vista Ultimate 64bit.
Great update in my opinion. -
Sp2 seems really slow for me. Boot up has been bad, takes a little bit longer for internet connection to work and when it does connect, it lags sometime. I did the clean up tool, defrag everything, clean reg., and it's still slower than sp1. Sp2 takes about 1.1gb of ram while sp1 only required 800-900mb doing the same thing. Apparently microsoft is focusing all their resources into windows 7.
-
Recently, I can't see the Windows Vista SP 2 update available anymore.
Izzit MS closed it? -
-
I had several system crashed of my SP1 before. I then checked the event logs and got three system errors. I googled those event ids and try to fix it one at a time. I guess that helps my OS. After, I installed SP2 on 5/26. Unpon the first reboot after the installation of SP2, so far, it runs fine. -

he doesn't want, as for him, vista always was a complete failure. he's now a win7 fanboy believing it's so much better than the same os with other taskbar

I dont know, it seems kinda funny that there was a Vista SP2 beta, RC, and also a leaked RTM, but once the RTM was available for public use, then a ton of problems just came about. Through the beta, RC, and RTM, I know that thousands of people must have tried it all over the world, and just now, people are having trouble? That just seems kinda akward to me. I myself, have tried the leaked RTM and the publicly released RTM, and both work flawlessly on my laptop, and as well on my gf's laptop, and all other computers I have installed it on.
-
No issues here, sorry!

My sp2 update was flawless. After a brief defrag of the startup applications my laptop boot up time is cut down by at least 15 seconds. Once the desktop appears, internet is immidiately accessible (as is opening folders etc).
I also noticed that executing the services.msc using the run command does not work. However, the services option can be accessed through the control panel, and it is not a big deal.
After prolonged use, my average hard drive temperatures have also gone down by around 5 degrees (from a blistering 50 degrees to around 45). -
Why does MS EXcel 2007 takes about 10 sec before becoming responsive?
-
No problem here, Windows Vista Home Premium x64, Windows feels a tad faster overall.
-
So far so good. In having had a decent SP2 download, I feel like I have escaped a bullet. . .
-
I've read what sp2 is supposed to bring to the table and I just don't need those things.
I don't want to add to the space Vista consumes and I don't care for the Windows search at all.
Vista is running very well for me and things are set up the way I like them so the next change I make will be getting W7 when the retail version is released. -
Hahaha! I can see the SP2 via Windows Update again.
But, I disabled it. XD
Question:
Piriform Defraggler can defrag boot sector fragments? -

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.....

If a service pack is not installing, or not installing correctly, it's almost certainly because something was done to the system (usu. some sort of "tweaking" by the owner/user, or by some ham-fisted wannabe who sets things up for customers at places like bestbuy (as in, you'd best buy someplace else). It can also occur if you're installing from an account that doesn't have full admin privileges, or if some of the prior updates were done under different user accounts (in which cases you may get strange results in the ACLs for the various files that have to be replaced during installation of the service pack).
I had a heck of a time getting XP SP3 to "take" on a Gateway we bought several years ago that had been a floor model at bestbuy, and as far as I could figure out, the so-called "geek" who was supposed to do a clean reinstall on the system before we took it home basically hacked out the Bestbuy gunk, straightened everything up as best as possible, and gave us what amounted to an access permissions frankenstein - this permission from one account, that from another, and a third from, well, you get the picture.
Viz. _Vista - didn't have even a speck of trouble when it came up for 64-bit on WinUpdate for the new notebook I just bought (yah! R.I.P. 6-y.o. VAIO), and installed in a lot less time than even the installer warned about. -
i just had a go round with sp2 and it was not good. it did not install and it didnt revert the changes it made as i found out after a restart in the system menu it said service pack 2. i restored back to sp1 and am not sure what to do. did not have a problem installing sp1 though. does this make any sense?
i am grateful that i have an external hdd now. 320 gigs too! -
i got a asus g50vt-a1 and just installed sp2.. boot time got from 49secs (sp1) to 1.19secs (sp2).. i hoped for a faster boot time tbh..
-
It is impossible for an update to create much a different.
49-1.19=47.81 -
with sp1 i booted within 49 secs
with sp2 it took me 1min and 19 secs -
Yea.. same with me. It boot-up freaking slow after the installation.
Now, I don't dare touch it 1st.
Anyway, I guess the problems of SP2 slow boot-up is due to my personal tweaking of vista SP1. -
-
Doesn't SP2 require you have SP1 installed?
-
No problems over here.
-
SP2 boots slower, but runs faster.
To me it's worth it. Especially since I usually sleep or hibernate rather than shutdown/startup.
I do hope they issue updates to improve the booting speed though. -
That's why I reverted it to SP1. -
Personally I haven't noticed any changes in boot speed - both _Vista SP1 and SP2 boot with lightning speed on the new _HP as compared to the 6 y.o. VAIO (R.I.P.).
Windows Vista SP 2 is not a total success!
