Why am I not surprised?
-
Tell me about it.
-
I'm not surprised either, as the article states, people always have problems when updating. Even with XP.
-
That's why I only installed SP1 on my desktop. I'm too afraid to install on my notebook at the moment, more chance of driver problems.
-
-
It's pretty easy, Calvin.

Its funny though. Most of us on the forums have had minimal problems, and so do alot of the people who left comments on the site. Its always becomes a big deal when some people experience problems. Honestly there never will be a %100 smooth transition.
-
What am I missing? I use Windows update and have been doing it regularly, the last about 10 min ago, however I have never seen anything that says "SP1". I have read that with regular updates a lot of what is in SP1 has already been included in those updates.
What should I expect to see with the Windows update?
How can I test to see if "SP1" (or its equivalent) has been installed?
As far as I can tell nothing has changed and all is working well, so I am not sure if this is the appropriate thread for these questions, so please be patient with me.
Thanks -
I haven't had a single problem since the RC version of SP1; but I haven't seen any improvements in performance or anything.
-
Installed the x64 version on my desktop and the x32 on my Dell XPS m1530 and everything is working A-OK, no driver problems and all softwares are working. I do notice that Outlook loads faster.
-
You'll see Vista Service pack 1 if have it.
u can also go to control panel>system and maintenance>view ram and system or w/e -
I would strongly advise you to review all of the documentation at the SP1 site before the install.
http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/w...ows-vista-sp1-released-to-windows-update.aspx
In my opinion a good portion of the folks complaining did not do so, and just rushed in without reviewing the documentation. -
havent had a problem with SP1, it doesnt improve anything for me it seems but doesnt kill the PC either!
-
We have installed SP1 on 20ish installations at work.
Not one problem.
Most are Dell laptops, a few newer whitebox desktops, and my Toshiba.
General impressions are all positive. Most patched boxes received only minor improvements, but network transfer rates for copies are definitely better.
The best part is not having to hunt down all the hotfixes anymore. -
Vista SP1 is great !!
-
I have had absolutely no problems since I installed SP1. I suspect that most of the problems people are getting with SP1 can be traced to the fact that it wasn't offered to them via windows update so they went and got the standalone installer instead. The problem with that is as we all know windows update won't offer you SP1 if it detects drivers on your system that are not compatible with the service pack, but I doubt the stand alone installer checks for this.
The next problem that could be causing the havoc is the users who have used Vlite on there vista installs. As microsoft has said for a long time now if you use that program to strip components out of vista there is a big chance new updates or service packs will not install (or give you system errors) as the components are missing. -
But what about those of us who manually updated the drivers? EG. on Lenovo systems the UPEK fingerprint driver and the Intel X3100 drivers needed to be updated. The new drivers are fine - they are not beta versions or anything, they just weren't blessed by Lenovo yet.
WU now sees the proper drivers in place and allows the install. In my view any problems with the SP1 install after this point are Microsoft's fault, not the user's. -
I think thats a very bias report to generated attention to the article and attract mundanes who have been programed for the last year to hate Vista (people how don't have an original opinion in their heads and couldn't tell you why they hate Vista except repeat word for word what they have heard in the news).
Idiots, all of them -
Microsoft is trying to support millions of configurations and combinations of hardware and drivers and software.
It is not possible to test every single configuration, and thus Microsoft released something that works on the vast majority of computers.
There will be exceptions because Microsoft can only test a limited number of possible combinations, and that is counting only hardware configurations with professional and competent techs working on them.
IBM happens to be one of the most worst offenders for proprietary hardware and software practices. I can't say I am surprised SP1 doesn't install smoothly on your configuration, and while I sympathize with your situation, blaming microsoft for IBM and their proprietary methods is ludicrous at best.
There is also no way Microsoft can account for the stupidity of some users.
Example:
"It squeaked while it updated, so I oiled it to make it work better."
(actual customer quote from back in the days of XP upgrades)
As much as I dislike much of Microsoft's practices, I will not hold Microsoft accountable for manufacturers like IBM choosing to be difficult or massive user stupidity.
There are indeed some things Microsoft must take the blame for... but not all such cases (and frankly yours as well) are applicable. -
Them: "You have the Vista? It's like, supposed to be really good from what I've heard."
Me: "Why?"
Them: "Because it's new. And my friend who knows a lot more than you says so."
Me: "Oh."
[next day]
Them: "So, from what I hear, the Vista's not that great."
Me: "Oh?"
Them: "Well, based on what I've been hearing, it's, like, a lot worse than XP."
Me: "What makes you think that?"
Them: "Well, I was talking to some people who said XP is, like, a lot better on RAM and stuff, and..."

I'll agree that the original article was probably intended only to ruffle feathers. The SP1 problems are probably not that severe and widespread.
But to me it's starting to sound like there are a lot of Vista fanboys cruising these boards as well. I can understand that SW development is a difficult thing these days, but Vista has to be one of the worst product releases in history! On a good day it's pretty nice, but there are times when it's downright ugly.
If I had as much time on my hands as you guys I'd have no problem with a completely clean install either. I'm sure it would all work after that, at least until the next SP release. -
Vista hasn't gotten too ugly on me, but then again I don't use a lot of critical hardware/software...
-
Well it installed fine on my laptop after figuring out you have to go to Windows website in Internet Explorer and Manually select the Windows update link from there.
But on my mothers desktop it showed up in the Windows Update window automatic so I thought everything was good. Well I tried it like three times and everytime it would always get to the stage 3 and then when it gets 100% it sits there for several minutes and then says the installation failed reverting back to previous.
I checked HPs site and thought I had all the drivers and everything up to date for the desktop also. Then I noticed it is using Intel graphics so it must be incompatible with something here. This is a Pavilion desktop from last spring.
I am gonna check the problem list for the problem devices/drivers. -
This doesn't suprise me one bit.
Win Key + R
type cmd & press enter
in the prompt, type in winver.

lol, Vista.
That is all -
With the millions of computer users, there's going to be some that have issues, I think that's safe to say. Doesn't mean microsoft should be blasted for not making it "issue free". Nobody is perfect.
I for one am just glad it was released, it's solved some issues I was having with vista before.
-
Just installed Wednesday and not a single problem. It appeared in Windows Update and the install was smooth, with only 1 reboot. The reported problems have to be related with garbage that people install that modifies the windows system files, like Vista Glazz.
My recommendation: install only the essential software in your pc, and keep it as clean as possible. My Vista install had completed 1 year and it's as fast like the first day. -

Even though your lazy, I think five minutes is already quick enough -
I tried to install vista sp1 on my laptop but when it got to step three it just blue screened and restarted. It then carries on with an endless cycle until i say start in safemode. It then completes and undoes the changes. Then when you boot into vista again it says the service pack didnt install

Personally, I don't see how service pack 1 would wreak havoc on a few driver issues. I can see it causing some problems, but wouldn't a driver issue be easily reversible by either uninstalling the service pack or by updating the driver?
I installed through the standalone installer without seeing the which drivers would cause issues. (BTW, it would've been wise for them to put the drivers that were causing issues on the page where you download the installer.) I had an issue with the upek driver and the x3100 driver. After the installation I didn't notice any wrong with vista. However, after realizing that I did have the drivers with the issues, I went and updated them. I've had no problems and it's been 4 days.
The point I'm trying to get at, is that I have a feeling that the people whose computers reacted really badly with SP1 has to do with something other than a driver issue. Maybe as some of the other posters on here said, it might have to do with people tweaking vista. -
-
I downloaded it again like Shadowfate suggested but it did the same again. It gave the error code 0x8007043C
I am really not sure what the problem is. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out -
You can search in this file to perhaps find a clue:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
Look for the string "Error" or that hex error code and you should find something, maybe it will help.
I've tried installing different versions of my X3100 driver and nothing helps - I always get error 0x80070059. -
When 1 person has problems with Vista: Make a report about it in the news.
When 100,000 have problems with Linux: Bash them on a linux forum while acting like your God.
Why don't we just continue this:
When 2 million have problems with Apple: Their men.
When 1 person has problems with Windows ME: They get asked if one really did fly over the cokoos nest.
I'll make more when I'm damn good and ready. -
