MS-DOS SP43598324 and Happy Fun Time Unicorn Operating System of Pink Merriment Version 17 RC 3 Beta Gamma Oscar.

Kills me to decide between the two. I dual boot.

After messing around with vista for a while, it is apparent now that xp is out the door.

SP1 has smoothed vista out to become a very nice OS. The more I worked in vista, the more it grew on me.

Not to mention the extra features working behind the scenes...

Can't say Vsp1 runs loops around xp sp3, but it is enough to get my recommendation.

Bottom line for me: the overall experience in vista sp1 is better than the experience in sp3.

Although XP is still a very good OS, I prefer Vista. We need to move on and stop complaining about how bad Vista is. It isn't that bad. The only problems I've had since installing it in November 2006 (Volume Licensing!!) have been self inflicted-me trying to break it.

I prefer to disagree lol. With vista sp1 i see no noticable improvements, and when i use the passmark benchmarking test i noticed my score dropped by 10 points after the sp1 install from 365 to 355. xp sp3 on the other hand improved performance from 420 to 430. As you can see xp sp3 has around a 21% all round better performance than vista sp1.Also xp boots in 25 seconds compared to vista's 50. Of course if your computers are fast enough you will likely not really care.

I have only had my Vista For about 1 month now. And really I love it, there are some problems here and there, but I can fix them.

I have yet to try XP SP3, but in my guess like "andygb40" say's "We need to move on and stop complaining about how bad Vista is."

Yes there are still some problems with Vista, but they are normally easy to fix. So if you are still a XP man, go out and try Vista with SP1. Its not as bad as you think.

What is "best"? No clue. What is best, a boat or a car?

However, I use XP SP3, and I really don't have any complaints.

I noticed you are using Vista 64-bit with 2GB of RAM. How do you find the general performance of the OS to be?

I can`t really understand what you expect us to answer.
First off, the better system for what?
XP SP3 has no real benefit over SP2, whereas SP1 definitely made Vista enjoyable.
From the upgrade standing point, SP1 brought a lot more than SP3.
For the better overall system, for now, XP SP 2 :D

Great points, basically the same reasons why I now choose Vista over XP. XP just seems so bleh, even if I might gain some more performance. But since I have 4GB of RAM, I chose to install Vista 64-bit.

this is really all you need to know:
    Passmark Performance Test V6.1
    XP SP2 = 420
    XP SP3 = 430
    VISTA NO SP = 365
    VISTA SP1 = 355

only reason i'd go for vista is the visual aspect

I just bought new notebook and I got Vista Home Premium with SP1 and I like it :D. It's not so bad but still XP is faster.

Once you tweak it out, Vista will be faster. That's what happened for me.

I still like XP a lot (I use both), but I can honestly say there are some "Ugh- Windows" problems with XP still that I'm starting to get tired of. It's those problems versus a performance drop for me.

I haven't tried Vista and i'm not excited about re-learning how to use Windows - I choose XP.

Jisaac: Benchmarks are usually useless indicators. Does Vista feel slower or faster than XP? It can be a little bit slower if it's very responsive in terms of mouse availability, good progress bars, etc.

With the proper hardware, Vista is actually better since it uses the computer`s power in order to work, unlike XP.
I am in the phase of starting to like Vista, already passed the "accepting" it :)

Well, everything has its own pros and cons. To my point of view, I prefer XP3 cuz it is faster, use less resource in term of ram.

Vista is much faster, imo. Ram is because Vista uses it differently, but when you need it, it will release and give it to you. It's smarter.
