Windows Vista SP2 Beta Build 16489 released to testers
Identically to Service Pack 1 beta, Microsoft has started distributing the magical GUID to shove into select testers registries via a batch file. For those with build string fetishes, and to ultimately improve SEO scores, here you go: 6002.16489 (lh_sp2beta.080924-1740).

whats SP2 mean to improve?
-
hmm Maybe Gaming Performance or Overall Responsiveness of Vista
-
I hope it fixes the slower read/write times (which are one of the last few flaws)
-
More... Info.... Please....
-
Typically, how long does it take for these Service Packs to come out of beta?
-
It better make UAC less annoying.
-
I'm also curious about this, if anyone has any experience. I'm new to Windows.

No idea, but I doubt it will be out this year. Probably early next year. -
SP1 gave me enough problems ;/
-
What SP1 Gave you problems
-
Agreed, much as I like Vista this is one of the irritations I have. Stuttering in games due to drive access is quite annoying. I hope it also amends the permissions issues - nothing more annoying than being told you don't have permission to copy your own files to your own directory.
You need a service pack to go to into user accounts and turn it off for you? -
UAC is supposed to be annoying.
This service pack will probably not be out for a loooong time
-
SP1 screwed up my audio. Took me a couple of hours to fix it.
-
then it should be the other way around
Driver spoiled Vista
anyway i has Vista 32 SP1 and now Vista x64 SP1 , never faced any Audio issues
-
I heard you can turn that off...
I'll have to check if this is available to me yet. I have a subscription from Microsoft and I'm supposed to get the betas as they become available. This is supposed to be released just before Windows 7 arrives sometime next June. -
Yes you can, but that removes other protections other than just the elevation prompts. However, that's another discussion for another thread

Except that UAC does NOT do this. The only directories that UAC protects are the ones where you should not be placing your own files in the first place. Those directories are the operating system ones, and that is the whole point of UAC. It is SUPPOSED to protect the OS from tampering by users and nefarious applications.
Gary -
except for the fact that that's not true. UAC stands to make things harder than they should be and no more secure. Plus, I like modding my explorer.exe

Oh really? Show me a single directory that UAC is protecting that qualifies as one that AndrewM called "your own directory".
And UAC makes things "harder than they should be and no more secure"? Care to explain that ridiculous comment? Explain to us how UAC is no more secure. You obviously know more about the internals of an operating system than the folks who write them.
Gary -
erm, at what point did I mention UAC in that statement. Go back and reread my post. There are 2 seperate statements. The first being about the permissions, the second being about UAC. Make sure you get it right before picking fault.
FYI the directories i mention are nothing to do with UAC PLUS the fact that I turn UAC off. -

Nice find!
-
Interesting; looks like SP2 isn't meant to fix anything, but only to add support for bleeding edge technologies that nobody uses. Great.

I suppose burning blurays is one step closer to playing them natively in Media Center. Win 7 better have that feature then.
-
Glad to hear Microsoft keep updating Vista, and not just preparing Windows Seven.

At this point I would hardly call bluray a "bleeding edge technologies that nobody uses".
Gary -
I also would like improved Wifi support. I think the current wifi configuration is horrible sometimes it just plain sucks.
-
A bump up for this thread..
-
I hope blu-ray playability and whatnot becomes standard. It's a much better solution to DVDs IMO.
I'm wondering how the Wireless networking will be changed? -
I know about 2 people with bluray players, and the rest are not moving on to HD video any time soon. Movie rental places still carry mostly DVDs. It might not be bleeding edge, but it has a long way to go before being near standard.

I don't know quite about that. As the HDTV revolution ramps up - people like my parents, who could care less about HD content - are looking to buy. As HDTVs are required, and as they become cheaper (rapidly, I might add), blu-ray becomes more popular. It also becomes more popular when supported by more people. -
They're definitely entering the affordable range, but a 1080p HDTV is still definitely out of my price range (e.g. more credit than I should responsibly incur at this time), and I am an "average" income earner.
MY next TV will definitely be a 32+" 1080p, but in the mean time my 24" CRT TV works just fine with my much cheaper DVD player and even cheaper to purchase regular DVDs.
I think many people are in the same position.
